Kolkata, August 29: In a contested Calcutta Football League clash, Mohun Bagan SG secured a 3–1 win over Railway FC on Saturday afternoon at the Mohun Bagan Ground. Fielding a balanced squad of reserve and senior team players, Mohun Bagan SG displayed a comeback performance against a compact Railway FC side.
On paper, the green and maroon side was strong, but the Railway side was hard to beat for them as they showed a steady defensive game and a balanced attack with their experienced squad. Though, as time went on, Mohun Bagan SG capitalised on what was expected from those players on the field, who have played at the highest level, and ended up taking all three points.
Mohun Bagan SG started the game with attacking intent and, within the 14th minute, from Gazi’s pass, Kiyan Nassiri almost found the net, but Railway keeper Sudipta was alert. In the 20th minute, Sahal Abdul Samad earned a free-kick just outside the box, but from that promising position, the results didn’t come. However, with the move continuing from the right, Kiyan Nassiri sent a cross which Abhishek Suryavanshi almost headed into the net, but Sayan Sarkar made a goal-line save.
However, with a counter-attack, Railway FC got the lead. In the 40th minute, SK Golap sent a low pass from the right, which Umesh Marandi placed into the net. Though the lead didn’t last long, as Sahal’s shot Sayan Das made a contact with his hand, and awarded Mohun Bagan SG a penalty, which Manvir Singh converted to make it 1–1.
Within the start of the second half, Mohun Bagan SG took the lead through Rabilal. In the 52nd minute, Kiyan, beating the Railway defender, went into the box from the right and set up the ball for Rabilal, who placed it into the net.
Within two minutes, Tarak Hemram, showing his brilliance and experience, attempted a grounder towards the net, but Zahid made a crucial save to keep Mohun Bagan SG’s lead intact.
In the 64th minute, Mohun Bagan SG almost added another goal. Manvir moved forward from the right and, from inside the box, placed the ball in front of an empty net, but there was no green and maroon shirt positioned to finish it. It was another bit of brilliance from the Railway keeper as he closed the angle, leaving Manvir unable to attempt the shot directly at the net and forcing him to place it for another player.
As time moved towards the end, the Tarak-Sajal duo, with their counter-attacks, tried several times to equalise the score for Railway FC, but the Mohun Bagan defence remained steady.
And in the 79th minute, Mohun Bagan SG got their assurance goal. Suhail, who had just come onto the ground in place of Manvir, did his work quickly. From a corner by Kiyan, Suhail, in between two defenders, headed the ball into the net, giving Mohun Bagan SG a 3–1 lead.
With the crucial win, Mohun Bagan SG now have 19 points from nine matches and sit third in the highly contested Group A. Bhawanipore FC are on top with 24 points, while East Bengal FC second with 20 points. With the race for the Super Six heating up, the contest at the top of Group A is getting tougher with every match.
