Kolkata, August 28: Mohammedan Sporting Club lost as Coal India secured a 2–0 victory in the Calcutta Football League on the Friday afternoon at Barasar stadium. The result saw Mohammedan SC lose their position at the top of the table, with Coal India moving into first place after collecting three important points.
The game came at a difficult time for Mohammedan Sporting, with another major change taking place around the team. Mehrajuddin Wadoo step down from his charge yesterday, and Saheed Ramon took charge of the side as the new head coach. Ramon, however, is not unfamiliar with Mohammedan SC, having been associated with the club before.
With a new man in the dugout, Black Panthers looked to start this new chapter with a positive result, but Coal India the newly promoted team from first division CFL after winning, but with a experienced and balanced squad they had other plans at Barasat.
The first half remained competitive, with both sides trying to find a way through. Mohammedan managed to keep Coal India away for most of the half, but just when it looked like the two teams would go into the break without a goal, Coal India found the breakthrough.
In the 45+2nd minute, Coal India with a corner with a precise delivery created an opportunity inside the Mohammedan box. Azharuddin Mallick was there to finish from the corner and put Coal India ahead just before half-time. Black Panthers went into the break trailing 1–0, having conceded at a crucial moment after attempting many goalbound moves.
After the restart, Coal India tried to double their lead and had an opportunity to get back into the match. In the 52nd minute, a defensive lapse gave Sayan Roy the chance to get the ball in a dangerous position, he attempted a shot, but the effort lacked the power needed to trouble the Mohammedan goalkeeper, who managed to make the stop. It was a big chance for Coal India to extend their advantage, but the second goal did not come at that moment.
Mohammedan continued to search for an equaliser, but Coal India remained organised and kept their lead intact. As the game moved towards the final stages, they needed to find a goal quickly to keep themselves in the contest. Instead, Coal India delivered the final blow in the 88th minute.
Azharuddin Mallick once again played an important role, making a quick run from the left side and entering the box before putting in a square pass. Jaskaranpreet Singh arrived at the right moment and finished the move, sending the ball into the net to make it 2–0.
There was no way back for Mohammedan after that, and Coal India walked away from Barasat Stadium with a valuable victory.
The defeat means Mohammedan Sporting have now slipped from the top of the Calcutta Football League standings. Coal India have moved into first place with 19 points from 10 matches, while Mohammedan SC remain on 18 points from nine matches.
Mohammedan still have a game in hand, but the timing of the defeat makes the result even more important. With Saheed Ramon now taking charge after Wadoo’s departure, the Black and White Brigade will have to quickly regroup and find a response as they continue their CFL campaign.
