Kolkata, August 30: Defending champions of the Calcutta Football League, East Bengal FC have moved to the Super Six of the ongoing Calcutta Football League with a 2–0 victory over Calcutta Customs on Sunday afternoon at the East Bengal ground.

Early in the match, within four minutes, Monotosh Majhi found the breakthrough and put East Bengal FC ahead. The continuous attacking pressure saw East Bengal FC double their lead before half-time. In the 35th minute, from a goal-bound move, Akash Hemram placed the ball into the net from close range with his second attempt and gave the Red and Gold brigade a 2–0 lead.

But the second half became more contested as Calcutta Customs tried to restore the score. With both teams playing attacking football and showing steady defence, the next half of the match saw a contest, though no more goals came.

In the 69th minute of the match, Calcutta Customs got a chance from a corner. From the resulting corner kick, they played a short corner and built up an attack. From outside the box, Riki Gharami attempted a shot, but it went over the crossbar, resulting in nothing.

In the 73rd minute of the match, Calcutta Customs were reduced to ten men as Manoranjan Singh fouled Rabi Das while stopping him from an attack. He conceded his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card.

In the 84th minute, 10-man Calcutta Customs got their best open chance of the match, but they missed it too. From the right, inside the box, Rajen Oraon made a direct attempt at the net instead of passing to his teammate Marshall Kisku, who was positioned in the right place. Rajen just had to make a cut-back to bring a positive outcome.

Before the end of the match, East Bengal FC almost got their third goal, but Calcutta Customs’ defensive solidity stopped it. As the Calcutta Customs keeper Somnath Dutta was out of his position, Mohammed Bilal beat him and moved forward towards the empty net inside the box. But before he could make his attempt, Rudranath Samanta made an interception and clearance.

With the victory, East Bengal FC moved into the Super Six with 23 points from 10 matches, keeping their title defence on track. Meanwhile, Calcutta Customs remained on 15 points from 10 matches, bringing an end to their hopes of making it to the Super Six
