Mohammedan SC Secure Dominant 3–1 Win, but Congested CFL Schedule Raises Serious Concerns

Kolkata, July 17: Mohammedan SC secured their second consecutive victory in the ongoing Calcutta Football League with a 3–1 win over Aryan Club on Friday afternoon at the Mohammedan Ground.

Playing attacking football, the Black and White Brigade started the match brightly and broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. From a well-built move, Adison Singh played a through ball inside the box, which Israfil Dewan redirected into the net to give Mohammedan SC a 1–0 lead.

In the 39th minute, following a defensive lapse from Aryan Club, Mohammedan SC doubled their advantage. From a quick attack, Arprit Chhetri drove into the box from the left flank and played a minus pass, which Sourav Das Gupta attempted to clear. However, the ball ended up in the back of the net, resulting in an own goal that extended Mohammedan SC’s lead to 2–0.

However, in the final minute of regulation time, Aryan Club reduced the deficit. Saikat Das Gupta, with a turning shot from inside the box, struck brilliantly to make it 2–1. Within two minutes of added time, Saikat Das Gupta created another chance that almost brought the equaliser, but his low shot hit the bottom of the post and went inches wide.

The second half saw Mohammedan SC maintain their attacking rhythm, though Aryan Club also created some scoring opportunities through their defensive approach. The final goal came in the 79th minute through Israfil Dewan’s header. After a missed clearance, Mohammedan SC capitalised on the loose ball, and following a build-up from the right, substitute Lalthankima delivered a cross into the box, which Israfil headed into the net to complete his brace and seal a 3–1 victory for his side.

Apart from registering consecutive wins by the same scoreline, one issue was clearly visible, which is affecting the players, the scheduling of the matches. With only two days’ gap between games during the rainy season and on wet grounds, the players are having to play match after match with very little recovery time. As all three Kolkata giants are set to play in the Durand Cup soon, this is the kind of schedule the Indian Football Association has prepared for the CFL fixtures.

Mohammedan SC head coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo raised concerns over the scheduling, calling it unfortunate and saying that the Indian Football Association should look into the matter. He stated that it is a serious issue for Mohammedan SC, as this same squad will also compete in the Durand Cup, making player fitness and caution the biggest concern with such a congested fixture list.
