Kolkata, October 28: Mohun Bagan Super Giant were held to a goalless draw by a spirited Dempo SC in their AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 Group A clash at Fatorda. Despite dominating possession and creating over 20 chances, the ISL double champions failed to find the net as the all Indian I-League side showcased remarkable defensive discipline and resilience.
Mohun Bagan SG head coach Jose Molina made eight changes to his starting eleven, opting for a fresh approach with two natural wingers to stretch the field. The early minutes showed intent from both sides. In the 5th minute, Vinay’s powerful long-range effort tested Mohun Bagan’s alertness, signaling Dempo’s ambition to take the game to their illustrious opponents.
As the game progressed, Mohun Bagan began asserting control. Dimitrios Petratos’ shots from distance at 24th minute, and Ashish Rai’s header at 36th minute came close but were either blocked or comfortably collected by Dempo keeper Sibi. Despite the Mariners’ dominance, Dempo’s well-structured defence absorbed the pressure efficiently, forcing Molina’s men into wide play and aerial crosses that were easily cleared.
By halftime, the Goan side had successfully frustrated the Kolkata giants. Molina’s tactical setup looked blunt as Dempo’s compact backline refused to yield any space in or around the box.
The second half saw Mohun Bagan increase the tempo. In the 67th minute, the Mariners looked sharper in attack, but Dempo’s defenders continued their heroic work. Two minutes later, Petratos picked out Jamie Maclaren with an inch-perfect long ball. The Australian striker controlled it beautifully but failed to convert from close range. Moments later, Petratos’ follow-up strike was blocked by Mohammad Ali.
In the 87th minute, Vishal Kaith produced a crucial one-on-one save to deny Hobley and keep the Mariners in the contest. As the game entered stoppage time, Mohun Bagan threw everything forward. Substitute Manvir Singh missed two golden opportunities, first with a header off target in the 91st minute, and then again in the 93rd, when his free header from just right outside the six-yard box went over the bar.
The final whistle confirmed another hard-fought point for the Golden Eagles, who have now held both Kolkata giants in consecutive matches. Their disciplined defending and tactical awareness earned them plenty of praise as they continue to dream of qualification, with a slim chance dependent on other results.
For Mohun Bagan, the draw leaves them with four points from two matches, level with East Bengal FC, who lead the group on goal difference as they have four goals. The upcoming Kolkata Derby on 31 October now promises to be a high-stakes encounter, potentially deciding who advances from Group A.
