East Bengal and Mohun Bagan clash in the IFA Shield final, promising another thrilling Kolkata Derby showdown.
The IFA Shield is set for another blockbuster Kolkata Derby as East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant prepare to meet in the final on October 8. The two arch-rivals have earned their places in the title clash after contrasting semi-final victories, setting up another high-profile battle between the city’s two football giants.
East Bengal ride on seven-goal semi-final
East Bengal booked their place in the final with a commanding 7-2 victory over NorthEast United FC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan. David Lalhansanga was the standout performer, completing a hat-trick, while Rohit Kumar, Chris Economides, Ake Loba and Lukas Zjelinski also found the net.
NorthEast United had taken an early lead, but East Bengal quickly responded and turned the contest in their favour. The Red-and-Gold brigade led 3-1 at half-time before producing an even stronger attacking display after the break.
The result also underlined East Bengal’s attacking momentum heading into the final, with the side now looking to add another major trophy after their Durand Cup triumph.
Mohun Bagan survive shootout, Derby awaits
Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, secured their final berth after overcoming Punjab FC in a tense semi-final. The match remained goalless through regulation and extra time before the Mariners won 4-3 on penalties.
The final will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, better known as Salt Lake Stadium, on October 8, with the match scheduled for 6:15 pm IST.
The timing also poses a challenge for both clubs, as several players are involved in India’s international fixtures against Brazil and Uruguay. With the ISL season and continental commitments approaching, managing player workload could become an important factor.
Nevertheless, the IFA Shield final promises another intense chapter in the Kolkata Derby, with East Bengal seeking to continue their recent success and Mohun Bagan aiming to claim the Shield at their rivals’ expense.
