Durand Cup 2026 Final: Epic Kolkata Derby for Historic Glory

East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG meet in a historic Kolkata Derby final, with the Durand Cup 2026 trophy, rivalry and bragging rights at stake.

Kolkata, August 22: Where the Durand Cup 2026 started, it is going to end there. With Asia’s biggest clash, the Kolkata Derby, Asia’s oldest tournament is going to conclude tomorrow. From 5:00 PM, East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG are going to play the Durand Cup 2026 final.

While the head coach of Mohun Bagan SG, Panagiotis Dilmperis, stated there will be no tomorrow, the ninety minutes will decide everything, and this Durand Cup final with the biggest derby clash is the advertisement of Indian football on the global stage. The East Bengal gaffer, Antonio Lopez Habas, cleared out that in his dictionary, nothing except winning exists, and learning from the previous Derby, he just doesn’t want to lose the match.

Panagiotis also pointed out the hectic schedule his side has had to deal with ahead of the final. After travelling to Shillong for the semi-final and returning only yesterday, Mohun Bagan SG have had little time to recover and prepare for another high-intensity game on Sunday. He expressed his disappointment with the schedule, calling it unfair to the team that finished first in the group stage. With limited time for training and recovery, the coach believes the biggest challenge now is not only physical but mental, as the players have to prepare their minds for one more decisive battle.

Habas, meanwhile, did not put the focus on the schedule. His words reflected more on how the players are being managed in the final hours before the Derby. In a new approach from the East Bengal gaffer, he has not arranged a traditional pre-match practice on the field, as he believes discussions, tactical meetings and preparation away from the pitch are also an important part of the build-up to a big game. With the players having already done their work, Habas feels they are ready to play, while the focus now is on recovery, rest, understanding the game and continuing to build the group before the final.

For both the Kolkata giants, PV Vishnu won’t be available tomorrow as, after the quarter-final, he wasn’t in playing condition due to a knee injury, while the other players except Danish Farooq and Nacho in the squad are ready to feature. For Mohun Bagan SG, Miguel Figueira and Chhangte made their debuts in the semi-final and played almost 15 minutes with the team. Drazic was unavailable in the semi-final, but he has practised with the team and is expected to appear later, not in the starting XI.

The topic shifted to both the goalkeepers, as Vishal Kaith and Prabhsukhan Gill both played out a great penalty shootout in the previous contest. But a Derby, especially a Kolkata Derby, never has any margin for any single one. With the intensity and emotions, everyone will be prepared to give their best and snatch the win. And it’s a final, so it has to be intense, with the trophy at stake. Mohun Bagan SG can stretch their dominant lead to 18 trophies by winning it, while East Bengal FC can equalise with their arch-rivals at 17 trophies by lifting the trophy.

So, as the Durand Cup returns to where it began, it could not have asked for a bigger ending. The Kolkata Derby, the rivalry, the history and a trophy all come together on one final night. Ninety minutes or a penalty shootout will decide whether Mohun Bagan SG add another chapter to their dominance or East Bengal FC close the gap and lift the Durand Cup once again.

Before the 409th Kolkata derby clash what both the coaches reflects on their approach: Control the Emotion, Embrace the Pressure! Habas and Panagiotis’ Blueprint for the Derby Final.

“Feel the emotion, but control it.” — Experienced Antonio Habas on handling the intensity of the Kolkata Derby final.

“The most important thing is that we can control the emotion, because the emotion can be 100%. Until the moment we can execute what is most important to improve and determine the aspect of the play, practically and above all mentally”.

Experience, passion, confidence and balance — Learning the Derby, Panagiotis on what it takes to handle the pressure of a Derby final.

“I know exactly where I am, I know the demands.Experience is very important for a game like this.To have this feeling, the spirit, the air, the stadium full of fans, and the pressure, and we have a lot of experience, but it’s not enough. If you are not passionate, if you are not positive, if you are not confident, but at the same time, have balance. So, this is something that my players and us, as coaching staff, tomorrow we should get. We have to experience, but at the same time, we have to deal with all these emotions” .

From 5:00 PM. Live on Sony LIV. At Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
