Kolkata, July 28: Two fixtures of the ongoing Calcutta Football League (CFL) involving two of Kolkata’s giants turned out to be intense on Tuesday afternoon. In the Mohun Bagan SG vs United Kolkata SC match at the Mohun Bagan Ground, Mohun Bagan won 1–0, but the match turned much more chaotic, heated, and dramatic after the final whistle, with the tension spilling off the field. In the second fixture at the East Bengal Ground, East Bengal FC beat Patha Chakra 5–1 with complete dominance, continuing their unbeaten streak in the tournament.
During the match, early Gogocha found the net for Mohun Bagan SG, but his goal was ruled out by the referee, who adjudged him to be offside. As the match headed towards the end, in the 40th minute, UKSC player Vinil Poojari needed a forced substitution after a tussle with Mohun Bagan SG player, Babai Pailan came on in his place.
Within three minutes, Mohun Bagan SG got the breakthrough. From a quick move and a fast run, Sayan Banerjee from the left played a through ball to Suhail. In a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, Suhail placed the ball into the net, with the ball hitting the bottom of the post before going in.
Both teams kept the attacking pressure on, though Mohun Bagan SG created plenty of chances and missed several of them. Within a few minutes of that moment, Amit Tudu received his second yellow card after stopping Sayan Banerjee’s attack, which resulted in his red card and reduced UKSC to 10 men. But that was not the end. In additional time, in the 90+4th minute, Jobby Justin was shown a red card for a foul on Umar Muther, though the foul seemed very harsh, with replays showing Jobby attempting to challenge with his hand on Umar’s shoulder.
After the two red cards for UKSC and several heated moments on the pitch, tensions escalated further, leading to UKSC players being guarded from Mohun Bagan SG supporters after the match guarding their team bus. It took a long time for the situation to calm down. United Kolkata SC’s coach and management accused the referee of several questionable decisions, while Mohun Bagan SG’s head coach was also not satisfied with the officiating. After the match, referee Dipu Roy became the main talking point as both teams prepared to file complaints regarding his officiating.
In the other match, Akash Hemram gave East Bengal FC the lead early before Souvik Adhikary equalised for Patha Chakra. However, after that, East Bengal took complete control as Uttam Hansda scored in the 21st minute and again in first-half stoppage time (45+5′). Akash made it 4–1 for East Bengal in the 63rd minute. In the 89th minute, East Bengal were awarded a penalty, and Akash Hemram stepped up in search of his hat-trick. He missed the first attempt, but on the rebound, his shot took a deflection off Muhamed Bilal before going into the net, completing East Bengal FC’s fifth goal.
While Mohun Bagan SG secured all three points in a hard-fought contest, the match will be remembered and the moment will be continued much for the controversy and post-match chaos. Questions over the officiating and the heated scenes after the final whistle are likely to remain a major talking point in the days ahead. On the other hand, East Bengal FC continued their impressive run in the Calcutta Football League with another commanding victory, extending their unbeaten streak and once again underlining their title credentials with a dominant attacking display.
