Kolkata, July 27: Mohammedan SC kicked off their Durand Cup 2026 campaign with a dominant 4–0 win over Banaras’ Baghpat FC at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday evening. With a commanding victory and a dominant second-half display, highlighted by substitute Remsanga’s brace, they announced themselves at the start of their campaign.
The match started with both teams playing at the same pace, but as time went on, Mohammedan SC began pressing high. In the 15th minute, an incident occurred inside the Baghpat FC box when, following an attack, a high ball came in and goalkeeper Soibam Priyojit misjudged its flight and failed to collect it. Joseph Justin was following up, but the keeper managed to deal with the danger.
In the 26th minute, Baghpat FC created a scoring chance through a well-built move. Senthamil played a through ball into the box, and from the right, Naveen Krishna squared the ball close to the goal line, where Crispin C was positioned. However, he failed to make proper contact with the ball.
The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute when Lalthankima played a square pass from the right into the box, close to the goal line. In between a crowd of players, Fardin Ali placed the ball into the back of the net.
Early in the second half, in the 46th minute, two Mohammedan SC shots hit the crossbar. Inside the box, Lalthankima’s first attempt struck the crossbar, and the rebound fell to the unmarked forward again. However, his second attempt met the same fate, hitting the crossbar once again.
In the 72nd minute, Lalngaisaka unleashed a long-range effort that Soibam Priyojit saved, but the ball fell to Israfil inside the box. However, Israfil’s attempt went wide.
A minute later, Remsanga’s brilliance led to the second goal. Cutting inside the box from the right, Remsanga placed the ball into the net through the near post. In the 80th minute, Israfil Dewan found the net this time without any mistake, making the score 4–0 in favour of Mohammedan SC.
But that was not enough for the Black and White Army, as Remsanga scored his brace and Mohammedan SC’s fifth and final goal in the 85th minute. Goalkeeper Suvadip launched a long ball towards the Baghpat FC box, where their defender failed to deal with it. Remsanga beat his marker, surged into the box, and calmly placed the ball into the back of the net.
Missing several clear-cut chances, Mohammedan SC still managed to score four goals to begin their Durand Cup 2026 campaign on a commanding note. While the Black and White Brigade showcased their attacking quality, the champions of Indian Football League 3 Baghpat FC also displayed grit and courage, trying to play positive, compact football despite the heavy defeat.
