East Bengal FC will host Kuwait’s runners-up, while FC Goa travel to Turkmenistan to face FK Arkadag in the AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Stage on August 12.
Kolkata, June 11: India’s two representatives are set for their AFC Champions League Two challenge. The road to the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Two begins with the Preliminary Stage, scheduled to take place on 12 August 2026. Three clubs will secure their places in the Group Stage through this qualifying round, while the defeated teams will drop into the AFC Challenge League Group Stage.
Representing India, Indian Super League champions East Bengal FC and Super Cup champions FC Goa have now learned their respective opponents and venues for the AFC Champions League Two 2026–27 Preliminary Stage. With direct qualification slots reduced under the revamped continental competition structure, the two clubs secured India’s berths through success in the nation’s top-tier competitions, earning the opportunity to compete on the Asian stage.
East Bengal will host the second-placed team from the Kuwait Premier League, although their opponent is yet to be confirmed as the league is still ongoing. Al Qadsia, Al-Arabi, and Al-Salmiya remain in contention for the runners-up spot and a place in the AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Stage.
Meanwhile, FC Goa will travel to Turkmenistan to face FK Arkadag. Since their establishment, Arkadag have dominated Turkmen football, emerging as one of the strongest clubs in the country.
In their previous continental campaigns, both East Bengal FC and FC Goa had impressive runs. East Bengal FC reached the knockout stage of the AFC Challenge League, marking one of the club’s best performances in Asian competition. Meanwhile, FC Goa completed a memorable AFC Champions League Two campaign, gaining valuable experience against some of the continent’s strongest sides such as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
The Preliminary Stage will be contested as single-leg knockout matches. The club representing the higher-ranked member association will earn hosting rights. If the score remains level after regulation time, the match will proceed to extra time, and if required, penalties will determine the winner.
The victorious teams from the Preliminary Stage will advance to the AFC Champions League Two Group Stage, joining the clubs that have already secured direct qualification. The Group Stage draw is scheduled for 18 August 2026 and will determine the composition of the eight groups.
For Indian football, the Preliminary Stage presents an opportunity for both East Bengal FC and FC Goa to secure a place in one of Asia’s premier club competitions. A victory on 12 August would see either club advance to the Group Stage and continue their continental journey in the AFC Champions League Two.
