Chennaiyin FC hosted Mohun Bagan SG on January 21 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Throughout the match, the net remained untouched, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. This marked consecutive two draws for both teams.
In the 4th minute, Wilmar Gil got a chance and attempted a left-footed shot from the left side of the box, but it was saved in the bottom left corner. However, the pace of the match slowed down after that, as both teams failed to display an intense game. Both attempts six shots, with Mohun Bagan SG managing two on target, while the hosts managed only one.
As the teams headed into the tunnel for halftime, it was clear that Mohun Bagan SGhad the upper hand in terms of possession and control, with an impressive 75% ball possession. However, the scoreboard remained same for both.
Early in the first half, Mohun Bagan SG earned a free kick from a promising position to open their net. In the 49th minute, as Mohun Bagan SG launched a goal-bound attack, Irfan Yadwad made a rough challenge on Dimitrios Petratos just outside the edge of the box to stop him, resulting in a free kick. Petratos took the set piece and unleashed a stunning shot, but it hit the post and went wide.
Both teams played an unorganized and unrhythmic match. However, in the 90th minute, Chennaiyin FC got their best chance of the match. Shields sent a long cross into the box from the left, which Rayan Edwards attempted a header, but it was close and went just wide, Marina Machan’s only managed to attempt one on target shot throughout the 90 minutes.
Connor Shields had an exceptional game tonight, shining in a match where the others couldn’t make much of an impact. He was at his creative best, setting up four chances against tough opponents. Shields sent in nine excellent crosses, made one tackle, and showed great passing accuracy by completing 12 out of 15 passes.
Jose Molina made four changes to tonight’s lineup. On the other hand, Chennaiyin coach Owen Coyle was absent due to a card suspension, and Dinpuia was also unavailable after receiving a red card in the previous match.
