India U15 enter Tier C after a 1-6 loss to Senegal, with Honduras awaiting them in the knockout stage.
India’s U15 team will face Honduras in the next phase of the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival Azerbaijan 2026 after finishing third in Group K. The Blue Colts suffered a 1-6 defeat against Senegal in their final group match on October 26, ending a run of four games without a loss. The result was a setback for head coach Bibiano Fernandes, but India U15’s campaign in Baku is far from over. They will now compete in Tier C, with the next round offering another chance to test themselves against international opposition.
Why are India U15 in Tier C?
India U15 collected 10 points from five matches in Group K, finishing behind Cameroon and Senegal. Their campaign began with a 4-2 win over Laos, followed by a 2-1 victory against Cameroon. They then let a three-goal lead slip in a 3-3 draw with Grenada before beating Bahrain 4-3 with two late goals.
The final group match proved to be India’s toughest outing. Senegal raced into a commanding lead, with Abdoulaye Diallo scoring four times in the first half. Georges Kanfom and Pierre Mbengue also scored, while Ronandev Aheibam managed India’s only goal in the 33rd minute.
Senegal won 6-1, while Cameroon beat Bahrain 2-0. Both teams finished on 12 points, leaving India third with 10. That position placed the Blue Colts in Tier C, which determines the rankings from 65th to 96th.
The placement does not mean India U15 has been eliminated. They remain in the competition and will continue playing for their final position.
The tournament has six tiers based on group-stage finishing positions, with Tier A featuring group winners competing for the overall title and Tier B covering runners-up. Tier C covers positions 65th to 96th, while Tier D covers 97th–128th place; Tier E covers 129th–160th, while Tier F/G determine the lower overall positions.
What is the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival?
The FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival bring together youth teams from across FIFA’s member associations. The event takes a different approach from a conventional World Cup. Rather than sending teams home after an early exit, the format allows every side to keep playing until the tournament ends.
The matches are played in an eight-a-side format, with two 20-minute halves and rolling substitutions. The shorter games and smaller teams place a premium on quick passing, movement and decision-making. FIFA’s broader aim is to give young footballers more opportunities to play, learn and develop through international competition.
The tournament has a group stage followed by a tier-based knockout phase. Teams are placed in different tiers according to their group-stage results, and each tier has its own set of matches and final.
India U15’s route through the knockout stage
India’s first assignment is against Honduras in the Tier C Round of 32 on October 28. The match is scheduled to kick off at 1 PM IST.
A victory would take India into the next round, where they would meet either France or Trinidad and Tobago at 7:45 PM IST. If the Blue Colts lose, they will move into the 81st-96th place bracket and play another match at the same time.
India U15 showed their attacking strength in the group stage, scoring 13 goals in their first four matches, with R Lalremruatfela and Macdonnish Ngairangbam playing key roles. However, the 3-3 draw against Grenada, after leading 3-0, exposed their difficulty in protecting a lead, while the 1-6 loss to Senegal highlighted defensive weaknesses. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes sees the tournament as a learning opportunity, and the match against Honduras will give the young side a chance to apply those lessons and bounce back.
