Kolkata, September 11, 2026: East Bengal FC and United Sports Club kicked off their Calcutta Football League 2025 Super Six campaign with a goalless draw on Friday at the East Bengal Ground. After a tough contest, both Lalkomol Bhowmik’s and Archisman Biswas’s boys failed to break the deadlock and dropped points in the crucial fixture.
As both teams had to play only three fixtures in the Super Six round and did not carry their group-stage points and goals, every fixture is a must-win for all. East Bengal started the match with attacking pace, while United Sports maintained their low-block defensive approach. The head coach also admitted that against a confident and balanced East Bengal side, they were more cautious, and that was their plan.
But the game became more physical as the rain-soaked ground made things difficult. In the 30th minute, Uttam Hansda attempted a long grounder, though Sourav Samanta was alert. In the 41st minute of the match, Mohamed Bilal attempted a shot from the right inside the box, but Sourav was well positioned at the post as the attack could not be converted into a goal.
In the second half, nothing impactful happened as United Sports looked to launch counter-attacks, while East Bengal were trying their best to break the deadlock, and both teams defence stood strong. In the 66th minute, from a goal-bound move, substitute Arghya tried a shot from inside the box but failed, and Bilal capitalised on the ball and attempted a shot into the empty net. However, the defence made a goal-line clearance to keep United Sports intact in the championship contest. And that was the most promising and open chance of the whole game
Archisman Biswas explained after the match that following the confident derby draw, the team’s mentality was affected which is usual and a few changes made the game a bit different for his side. Key player Bijay Murmu also missed the match due to a card issue that he received in the last group-stage fixture. The head coach also raised questions about whether three games are enough to decide a champion in the vital Super Six round. He urged that all the Super Six teams should play against each other to get a better outcome rather than depending on a single result.
With both sides dropping two crucial points, the goalless draw leaves the Super Six race wide open. With only two matches remaining for each team, East Bengal FC and United Sports Club will now look to make the most of their remaining fixtures and keep their title hopes alive.
