Kolkata, August 4: A night of relentless finishing from Mohun Bagan Super Giant led them to a record 8-0 victory, their biggest winning margin in Durand Cup history. Against South United FC The goals kept flowing from the fourth minute to the ninety minute at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday evening. The Manvir-Sahal combination worked brilliantly as Manvir Singh scored a hat-trick, while Suhail Ahmed Bhat, who came on with 20 minutes remaining, completed his brace before the final whistle. The other two goals came from the flying defenders.
Nothing serious came from the Bengaluru side, while the Mariners kept pressing high throughout the match. In the 4th minute, Anirudh Thapa cut back a ball for Manvir, but he missed his first attempt. Sahal came to the rescue and laid the ball back to Manvir, and this time he placed it into the net to bring the breakthrough. Then, in the 10th minute, from a corner, Alberto made it 2-0 with a header.
In the 19th minute, on the left outside the box, Drazic and Anirudh Thapa played a one-two before Drazic sent a cross into the box, which Rahul Bheke headed into the net. Within three minutes, Manvir made it 4-0 for Mohun Bagan SG with another setup from Sahal, sealing all the goals of the first half.
The second half resumed from where it had stopped, and in the 60th minute Manvir completed his hat-trick. From a corner, Anirudh Thapa sent a cross into the box, which Manvir headed into the net with a flying header. Within nine minutes, the fifth goal came from a misunderstanding in the South United defence. Drazic sent in a cross from the left, and after confusion between goalkeeper and defender Noel S, the ball went into their own net, resulting in an own goal.
In the 90th minute, Suhail made it 7-0 for Mohun Bagan with an on-target strike, and in the very next minute, from a square pass by Sayan Banerjee on the left, Suhail completed his brace and sealed an 8-0 scoreline for Mohun Bagan SG.
In a completely dominant display in their second match, Mohun Bagan SG defeated the IFL side, securing their second consecutive win with a superior goal difference. While Manvir’s hat-trick stole the spotlight and earned him the Man of the Match award, the whole team looked much better in terms of chemistry and fitness than in the previous match. The 20 minutes of game time for both Suhail Bhat and Sayan Banerjee will also boost their confidence, with the forward scoring twice and Sayan providing an assist.
However, despite coming into the match on the back of an impressive opening-game victory, South United FC found it difficult to cope with Mohun Bagan SG’s relentless attacking display. With the 8-0 win, the Mariners not only registered their biggest-ever victory in Durand Cup history but also strengthened their position in the group top with back-to-back wins.
