Mohammedan Sporting Club has served statutory legal notices against former investor Humayun Kabir after two ₹50 lakh cheques were allegedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
Kolkata, August 3: For over a century, Mohammedan Sporting Club has stood as one of the pillars of Indian football, producing unforgettable moments and shaping the country’s footballing history. But in recent years, the Kolkata giants have found themselves making headlines for reasons far removed from the pitch. The latest chapter unfolded on Monday as the club issued statutory legal notices against former investor Humayun Kabir over the alleged dishonour of two cheques worth ₹1 crore.
Mohammedan Sporting Club has initiated legal proceedings against former investor Humayun Kabir after issuing two statutory legal notices under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The notices were served through the club’s legal counsel following the alleged dishonour of two cheques worth ₹50 lakh each, taking the total disputed amount to ₹1 crore.
According to the club’s official statement, the two cheques, dated July 17 and July 20, 2026, were presented through HDFC Bank and were returned unpaid on July 21 with the bank’s endorsement stating “Funds Insufficient”. The club has claimed that the cheques were issued towards the discharge of a legally enforceable debt.
In the legal notices, Mohammedan Sporting Club has alleged that the dishonour of the cheques reflects a mala fide intention and amounts to an offence under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The notices have called upon Humayun Kabir to clear the outstanding dues within 15 days from the date of receiving them.
The club has further stated that if the payment is not made within the stipulated period, it will initiate appropriate criminal and civil proceedings under Sections 138 and 142 of the Negotiable Instruments Act before the competent court. Mohammedan Sporting Club has also reserved its right to pursue any further legal remedies for recovery of the alleged debt.
One of Kolkata’s football giants and among the most historic clubs in Indian football, Mohammedan Sporting Club has built a rich legacy over decades. However, in recent years, the club has gone through one of the most difficult and controversial phases in its history, with off-field issues repeatedly overshadowing matters on the pitch as it’s badly effecting their game, and steady move. And after new management the ray of hope came out that the all types of problem going to be end, but this latest legal development adds another chapter to a period that has tested the club’s reputation and stability.
