Kolkata, May 9: FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in a closely fought clash on Saturday evening in the Fatorda Stadium, keeping the league race wide open. Both teams had their moments throughout the game, but in the end, they had to settle for a point each.
FC Goa started brightly and create a chance In the 12th minute, Abdul Rabeeh showed individual skill as he kept the ball in play and dribbled past multiple defenders before his final touch went slightly heavy, allowing Vishal Kaith to collect safely.
The Mariners continued to push forward and almost found the breakthrough in the 19th minute. Tom Aldred meet a cross from a corner and headed towards goal, but Ayush Chhetri cleared the danger away, though the effort was not completely on target.
Around the half-hour mark, Robson made another attacking move down the right side. He smashed a dangerous ball across the box from the edge of the area, but nobody was there to connect as it waste out.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute, and it was Mohun Bagan Super Giant who struck first. A mistake from Sandesh Jhingan allowed the ball to fall kindly for Jamie Maclaren, and the striker slotted the ball past Bob after the keeper came off his line.
After taking the lead, tMohun Bagan looked confident and searched for a second goal. They continued posing attacking threat to FC Goa defence and seemed in control of the match.
However, the equaliser arrived in the 67th minute for the Gaurs from an unexpected moment. Ronney Wilson delivered a cross from the right flank that floated directly towards goal. Vishal Kaith backtracked but failed to reach the ball as it went into the net, giving FC Goa an equaliser and the young lad his first ISL goal.
Both sides searched for a late winner in the final moments. Deep into stoppage time, Drazic came very close to scoring after a perfect cross flashed across the box, but he was just unable to make contact. Despite creating more then 20 goalbound move, and capitalising on maximum ball possession the Mariners didn’t get all the points, in the other side the host were alert enough to get at least a point.
With this draw, the league race has become even more competitive. Mohun Bagan Super Giant now sit second with 21 points, level with East Bengal FC but behind on goal difference. FC Goa remain in fourth place as the battle at the top continues to heat up.
