United SC’s late equaliser denied Mohun Bagan three points, leaving all three Kolkata giants alive in the CFL title race.
The Calcutta Football League’s championship is going to be decided on the last match day of the season, as United Sporting Club’s solid resilience stopped the Mariners from snatching all three points. The match went to the last moment, when United Sporting Club’s late goal changed the outcome and the dynamics of the whole championship.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant faced United Sporting Club on a scorching sunny day at their home ground in their second match of the Calcutta Football League Super Six phase. After having a sweet taste in the first match, Mohun Bagan came into the field in a comfortable mood. Meanwhile, United SC came in confident after stopping East Bengal in their first match.
Both sides remained unable to break the deadlock till the 90th minute, but in the 91st minute of the game, Mohun Bagan scored the first goal when Sandeep Malik shot Kiyan’s corner into the net.
The last 10 minutes of the game changed the whole scenario of the league, with East Bengal drawing against Mohammedan; three Kolkata Giants are still alive in the title race.
Goaless 90 minutes
Mohun Bagan Super Giant was very inefficient with their clearance today, creating back-to-back chances did not help them to break the deadlock, in the first 4 minutes of the game, Sahal Abdul Samad created a chance but failed, again in the 24th minute, Sahal’s shot in the box missed the target. After that, the game moved on at its own pace, with MBSG continuing to attack. Deepak Tangri in the 28th minute produced a genuine long-range effort, but a great save by the United goalkeeper, Sourav Samanta, humbled the Mohun Bagan players. For 90 minutes from Kiyan Nassiri to Manvir Singh and especially Sahal Abdul Samad, who contested with the United captain and goalkeeper every time, the sheet remained clean.
United SC may fall short to create attack, but on defence they remained strong. In the 61 min when, it looked finally the scoreboard is going to open as both keeper and defenders missed on the ball, Manvir Singh slipped in the penalty box.
Shots, misses, and half-cleared passes dominated the match until the 91st minute when Mohun Bagan scored from a corner with Sandeep Mulick’s shot.
Dramatic injury time
Seven minutes were given as the added time in the match, and that’s where the game actually changed, Mohun Bagan broke the deadlock with Sandeep Mullick’s shot on the corner of Kiyan Nassiri. After that, the game reignited its pace. Aman Yadav of United SC who first faced a yellow card for the hand ball, faced his second yellow card for a foul and had to leave the field.
Sumay Shome’s goal changed the league dynamics
It was almost declared that Mohun Bagan was snatching away the three points and was going to remain at the top of Super Six; Sumay Shome had other plans. Almost like, pandava killing the dronacharya, Sumay Shome a student of Mohun Bagan’s CFL head coach Bastab Roy, in the 97 minutes of the game shot the ball into the nets and come at the level with Mohun Bagan.
His goal not only keep United in the title race but also opened chances for every other team participating in the Super Six. The last match day will now be the decisive one for each and every other team.
The Calcutta Football League Super Six title race is wide open after two matchdays. Mohun Bagan lead the table with four points from two games, followed by Mohammedan Sporting on four points but with an inferior goal difference. East Bengal and United Sports are third and fourth, respectively, both with two points. East Bengal must beat Coal India in their final match to stay alive. Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan will face each other in a potential title decider, with the winner becoming champions. Bhawanipore and Coal India also remain in contention, with both capable of reaching six points if they win their remaining matches.
