Kolkata, July 16: Mohun Bagan SG sealed a 2-1 victory over Kalighat Milan Sangha in the ongoing Calcutta Football League on Wednesday at the Kalyani Stadium.
Mohun Bagan SG struck early in the 3rd minute, capitalizing on a brilliant cross from Sandeep from the right flank, Pasang Tamang sent the ball into the net with a flying header, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Both teams displayed attacking intent, reflecting a clear sense of urgency. Kalighat MS responded strongly and found the equalizer in the 25th minute. Surajit Haldar took a long-range attempt, which appeared to deflect off Mohammed Belal before beating the goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1.
In the 40th minute, Bagan nearly regained the lead. A clever through pass from Sherpa released Gogocha inside the box, who found himself one-on-one with the keeper. His shot was on target, but the Kalighat goalkeeper made a crucial save with his leg to keep the scores level. The first half ended 1-1, with both sides creating chances and maintaining a high tempo throughout.
Mohun Bagan SG regained the lead in the 64th minute through Karan Rai, who found the net with composure to make it 2-1, from back to back attacks . The Green and Maroons kept pressing high, seeking to extend their advantage.
In the 74th minute, an opportunity opened up as Tongsin made a promising run into the box from the right. Pasang Tamang was well-positioned at the center, but Tongsin delayed to pass, allowing the Kalighat MS keeper to clear out the threat.
Kalighat nearly found the equalizer in the 85th minute when Ishan Sahi attempt a header to meet a cross inside the box, but his header went just wide of the post, a close opportunity for Kalighat MS.
Deep into added time, at 90+4th minute Mohun Bagan SG launched a swift counterattack. Shibam Munda went one-on-one with the keeper, but his attempt was denied by a save, missing a golden chance to extend the lead.
With that win, Mohun Bagan SG moved up to third position in Group A with 10 points from 5 matches, while Kalighat MS stand 12th with 2 points from 5 matches.
