Mohun Bagan SG beat Chennaiyin FC 2-0 in rain-hit Super Cup opener as Jamie Maclaren scores brace

Kolkata, October 25: On a rain-lashed evening at the Fatorda Stadium, Mohun Bagan Super Giant began their AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 campaign in their style with a 2-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC, a side fielding an all-Indian squad under their new head coach, Clifford Miranda.

The game kicked off with both sides displaying an attacking intent despite the heavy downpour reducing visibility and making the pitch slick. Chennaiyin started brightly, winning three free-kicks in the opening half-hour, but none truly tested the Bagan defence.

The turning point arrived in the 38th minute when Australian striker Jamie Maclaren capitalised on a brilliant move initiated by Liston Colaco. Beating his marker Laldinpuia, Maclaren sent the ball past goalkeeper Mohammed Nawaz to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead, moments after a crucial save from Vishal Kaith denied Jiteshwor Singh at the other end.

The first half saw the rain dictate the rhythm, with slippery conditions causing a few rash challenges.

After the break, as the rain subsided, Bagan took control with their tactical discipline and sharp transitions. Liston tried his luck from midfield in a cheeky attempt, but his shot went well over.

The decisive blow came in the 67th minute, when Maclaren doubled the lead with a clinical finish off Manvir Singh’s cross, sealing both his brace and Green And Maroon’s dominance.

Chennaiyin, featuring a young all-Indian lineup under Miranda, fought gamely but lacked the final touch in attack. Their best chance came deep in stoppage time when Manuel Pereira’s curling effort struck the outside of the post.

Mariners solid defensive display, combined with sharp attacking execution, ensured a perfect start to their campaign. The win propels them to the top of Group A, following East Bengal FC and Dempo SC’s dramatic 2-2 draw earlier in the evening.

For Clifford Miranda, this was a tough initiation as Chennaiyin’s new Indian head coach, but his side’s spirited performance in challenging conditions hinted at promise for the matches ahead.
