The city was alive as Emami East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG faced off in the much-anticipated ISL 2024-25 season’s first kolkata derby on Saturday 19 October, in the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. And the 59,872-strong crowd at VYBK witnessed a dominant 2-0 victory by Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the ‘Boro Match’ over East Bengal FC.

From the kickoff, Mohun Bagan SG started with an attacking football display. In the 3rd minute, from the right, Manvir Singh launched a cross, but Hector Yuste made a great clearance.
Later, in the 12th minute, East Bengal FC built up an attack. From the right, Nanda Kumar delivered the ball into the box towards the far post, where David attempted to strike, but goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made a crucial save.
A few minutes later, Manvir Singh found the net, but it was ruled out due to offside. In the 26th minute, during a counterattack, Nanda made a fast run with the ball and passed it to Saul Crespo. He back-passed the ball to Madid Talal, who took a long-range shot, but it hit the post.
In the 41st minute, Jamie Maclaren scored the leading goal for the Mariners with a calm, composed placement into the net. Mohun Bagan SG ended the first half with a dominant performance and a lead on the scoreboard.

In the 84th minute, Anwar Ali made a rough challenge on Greg Stewart inside the box. Mohun Bagan SG’s players were demanding a penalty, but the game continued. Four minutes later, they launched a quick attack. Substitute player Petratos entered the box in a one-on-one situation, and Prabhsukhan Gill brought him down in the wrong way, awarding them a penalty.

Petratos took the penalty kick and converted it into a goal, securing the derby win for Mohun Bagan Super Giant and sealing the scoreline at two-nil for the Mariners. With that win, Mohun Bagan moved into second place in the group table with 10 points from 5 matches.


Today, on the sideline, there was East Bengal FC’s new head coach, Oscar Bruzon, who arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning. After that defeat in the ‘Boro Match,’ East Bengal FC lost five consecutive matches, though there is a long season ahead.
