Khalid Jamil calls for sharper concentration and belief as India prepare to face Uruguay after their 4-0 defeat to Brazil.
Kolkata, October 5: The historic Brazil clash is over. The 4-0 scoreline remains, but for Khalid Jamil, the focus has already shifted to the final challenge of India’s three-match friendly window — Uruguay.
The Indian head coach admitted that the defeat against Brazil was difficult, but he also knows that there is little time to stay stuck on the result. With another strong opponent waiting, Jamil wants his players to take the lessons from the previous game and carry them into Tuesday’s match against the two times World champions.
For him, the biggest area that needs improvement is concentration.
“Again, I said the lack of concentration, so this game we must start with good concentration from first minute to 90 minutes. And you must have that belief, yes, you can get a good result,” Khalid Jamil said.
Uruguay will bring another demanding test for India. Khalid Jamil pointed towards the quality in the opposition squad and also highlighted the experience of their head coach Diego Forlan the former Mumbai City FC player. Having already played two games in this international window, India know what another high-level opponent can demand.
“They have quality players, they have all the players, they have quality. And they have one of the experienced and best coaches also, so it will be not easy game for us,” he said.
The short turnaround is another factor India have had to deal with. After playing Brazil on Saturday, the team has had only limited time to recover and prepare for Uruguay. But Jamil does not want that to become an excuse.
“We have less time for pick-up matches. But otherwise everybody will be fine by today and for tomorrow they all will be ready,” he said.
For the coach, the situation also demands responsibility from every member of the squad. Players need to recover quickly, while the staff have to make sure everyone is mentally and physically ready for another international challenge.
“Sometimes it happens. As I said, we have less time to recover. Sometimes there is an injury. So everything, you must solve the problem immediately,” khalid Jamil said.
The Brazil defeat has also underlined how costly one mistake can be against sides of this level. Against Uruguay, Khalid wants India to be prepared for both sides of the game rather than sticking to one approach.
“Early goal and just to go with the flow and we are going to play with a good team. So, one mistake will cost us very badly. So, we have to be very careful not to take this match lightly at all,” he said.
“They are physically strong, so we have to match them. And tactically also they are good. So depending on the situation, we must act. If required to defend, we will defend. If it is required to attack, we will go for attack.”
The message from the camp is similar. Akash Mishra admitted that the Brazil defeat hurt, describing himself as “a very bad loser”, but said the players have already turned their attention towards the final game.
“I was not feeling well and I feel all the boys, they feel. Maybe it was not up to the mark, some of the mistakes which we did, it was very casual,” the defender said.
Akash also pointed towards the demands placed on the players during such a short international window. For him, the number of days between matches cannot decide how prepared a player is.
“Like I said before, this is what, I mean the game demands from the player, we have to play whether it is two day or three day or whatever rest we get,” Akash Mishra said.
The Uruguay game also comes at a time when khalid is trying to look beyond the result of one particular evening. The Brazil defeat has given him things to work on, but the larger objective remains to put together a team that can grow with every international game.
For him, results have their own importance because they bring confidence, but that cannot be the only measure of the team’s progress. He wants to see a stronger side taking shape while also keeping an eye on what lies ahead.
“Results are also required. Because if you get good results, confidence will be there, then we can try. And yes, there will be a plan also to make a solid good team. So we cannot be specific on one thing. We have to think about the future also.”
That approach also leaves room for changes within the team. Khalid has made it clear that places are still open and the players have to make the most of the opportunities they get. Even Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s involvement against Uruguay is not ruled out, with the final call depending on how the team looks in training.
It is another reminder that this three-match window is not only about facing three different opponents. For the players, it is also about showing that they can handle the demands of international football, even when the recovery time is short and the quality of opposition keeps rising.
Panama tested India first. Brazil exposed the Blue Tigres lacks that can come from losing concentration. Uruguay now offers the final test.
And Jamil wants India to approach it without carrying the previous result into the next 90 minutes — with the focus back where it needs to be, from the first whistle to the last.
For the Blue Tigers, the task is clear, learn from what went wrong against Brazil, stay alert for the full 90 minutes and try to finish the window on a better note.
