Mohammedan SC face Mohun Bagan in the decisive CFL clash, with five teams still in contention and the championship set to be decided on the final matchday.
With one day left in the Calcutta Football League, five teams are warming up their dreams of winning. As of now, one day before the last match day Mohun Bagan holds the top position with four points while Mohammedan SC also with four points is sitting in the second position, Mohun Bagan’s top-notch performance against Coal India FC, in which they won the game 5-1, helped them to stay in a comfortable position.
The Super Six table says the championship position is wide open for all teams except Coal India SC.
Mohun Bagan will meet another Kolkata giant Mohammedan SC, in the decider Derby, on Saturday, the equation is simple for both teams, win and lift the trophy. The ultimate clash of the Super Six stage of the Calcutta Football League 2026, is scheduled to kick off at 3:00 PM tomorrow at the Barasat Stadium. East Bengal will meet Coal India FC at their home ground, and Bhowanipore FC who also have a chance to win the championship will face United Sports Club in the decisive match.
Win or complicate the maths: Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan are set for a decisive Derby
After playing two matches in the Super Six phase, both teams are standing with four points. Mohammedan SC has so far displayed one of the finest battles while Mohun Bagan’s run remained a bit shaky. Despite playing with senior members the Mariners have not remained consistent, on the other hand the white and black finishing second on the league table displayed serious determination.
Mohun Bagan will once again come into the field with senior players, giving a tough challenge to Mohammedan SC players in the derby. If the match ends up with a draw and Bhowanipore fails to win against United SC, Mohun Bagan will be awarded as champions because of goal difference.
The stage is set and Mohammedan SC will have to come with one aim, do or die.
Mohammedan head coach Saeed Raman said before the match in an interview to Revsportz, “We will continue the way we started the Super Six campaign.”
Talking about the unavailability of Fardin Ali, he said, “Everyone in the team is important, those who will fill the gap will also play an important role and we will try our best.”
How can other teams come into contention for the championship?
With five teams still mathematically alive. Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan SC lead the table with four points each. Their final clash is decisive: a winner reaches seven points and becomes champion. A draw takes both to five points, opening the door for the others.
Bhawanipore FC, currently on three points, can win the title by beating United Sports Club, taking their tally to six. If they draw or lose, they cannot finish above five-point teams.
East Bengal and United SC, both on two points, need victories to reach five. However, they also needed the Mohun Bagan-Mohammedan match to end in a draw and Bhawanipore to fail to win. Since East Bengal and United currently have zero goal difference, they would need a big-margin victory to overtake the teams above them on goal difference.
Coal India FC, on zero points, are eliminated.
Tomorrow, 19th September, CFL will have its showdown, with a last exciting day to arrive, and five teams are still in the race, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan SC will have to hold their breath to produce a composed performance to win the trophy.
