Kolkata, October 30: Bengaluru FC kick off their AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Group C encounter in the Fatorda stadium on Thursday evining, that showcased both youthful spark and seasoned composure.
From the opening whistle, the Blues set the tone with high-intensity pressing and fluid movement across the flanks. Bengaluru FC’s tempo constantly shifted, charging forward one moment and regrouping to defend the next, keeping Mohammedan under sustained pressure. The Kolkata side, however, stayed organised for much of the first half, trying to absorb the waves of attacks while looking for their own counter opportunities.
The breakthrough finally came in the 34th minute, courtesy of teenager Taorem Kelvin Singh, who announced himself on the big stage in style. A precise pass from Javi Sanchez carved open the Mohammedan defence, and Kelvin showed composure beyond his years, one touch to control, the next to slot the ball into the net.
Just before the halftime whistle, Mohammedan threatened on the break when Adison unleashed a long-range effort following a quick counter from the left, but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu collected the ball safely to maintain Bengaluru FC’s lead going into the interval.
The second half was a more fragmented affair, with both teams struggling to find rhythm. Bengaluru tried to stretch play, while Mohammedan pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Despite their efforts, clear-cut chances were rare, and the Blues held their defensive shape well.
In the 85th minute, Bengaluru FC were handed a golden opportunity to seal the game when substitute Sunil Chhetri was brought down inside the box by Dinesh Meitei. Sunil made no mistake from the spot, calmly sending the ball into the back of the net to score his 10th goal of the tournament and put the result beyond doubt.
Bengaluru FC ended the game with 58% possession and four shots on target, while Mohammedan managed 42% possession and three on-target attempts, a respectable showing, but not enough to break through the Blues’ experienced backline.
With this win, Bengaluru FC continue their solid run in Group C, while Mohammedan SC, despite their spirited display, will rue missed chances and defensive lapses at crucial moments.
