Mohun Bagan SG Appoint Sergio Lobera as Head Coach: A New Era Begins in Kolkata

Kolkata, November 26: Mohun Bagan SG have officially appointed Spanish tactician Sergio Lobera as their new head coach, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter for the historic Kolkata club. Training under the new boss will begin from 30 November, as the Mariners regroup with renewed ambition.

Lobera first arrived in India in 2017, taking charge of FC Goa, where his possession-based, attacking style quickly earned admiration across the league. His tenure saw FC Goa lift their first ISL League Shield in the 2019–20 season, establishing him as one of the most influential coaches in the country.

In 2020–21, Lobera scripted history with Mumbai City FC, becoming the first head coach to achieve the ISL double, winning both the League Shield and the ISL Cup in the same season. His success elevated Indian football’s tactical standards and cemented his legacy as one of the ISL’s finest minds.

After joining Odisha FC in 2023, he revitalised the side but eventually parted ways with the club by mutual agreement. Now, Mohun Bagan SG have brought him to Kolkata with a clear vision: to continue their rise and maintain their dominance on both domestic and continental fronts.

The transition also marks the departure of Jose Molina, who had returned to India after 2019, joined Mohun Bagan in 2023–24. Under his guidance, the club won the League Shield, qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite, and in the following season completed the double with another Shield and Cup triumph. Despite his achievements, the club has now officially handed the reins to Lobera.

Speaking after signing, Sergio Lobera said,

“It is a great honour for me to take charge of Mohun Bagan Super Giant. This club has a rich history, full of passion and high expectations. I want to build a team that reflects that reputation, a team that will play with sincerity, identity, and the mentality to win. We will work together to make this chapter truly memorable.”

He further added,

“This team already has talent and the strength of heart, capable of dominating Indian football. I am here to take that potential even higher. Mohun Bagan deserves to be at the top, and we will work every day to turn that dream into reality.”

As the Mariners prepare to begin training under their new leader, the Lobera era promises a blend of ambition, identity, and high-intensity football, a combination the club hopes will fuel their next wave of success.
