Kolkata, June 28: Sujata Kar began another historic journey of her coaching career, as the first woman head coach in the history of the Calcutta Football League. She took charge as the head coach of Southern Samity. Southern Samity and Shribhumi FC kicked off their CFL 2025 campaign with a 2-2 draw at the Naihati Bankimanjali Stadium on Saturday. This is Shribhumi FC’s debut season in the Premier Division of the Calcutta Football League.
The battle was intense from the start to the final whistle. Southern Samity took an early lead in the 12th minute when, from Mithun Kar pass, from the right Soail Ali sent a grounder shot to the far post into the net. However, before halftime, Shribhumi FC equalised the score. From a quick attack in the 44th minute, Aritra Ghosh made a solo run, cutting past opposition players and entering the box, where Muhammed Shammas brought him down with a rough challenge, resulting in a penalty. Bibin Boban stepped up and converted the penalty into Shribhumi’s first goal.
In the 57th minute, Shribhumi FC launched an effective attack. Aritra Ghosh played a through pass to Sourav Das inside the box, but he failed to make proper contact with the ball and narrowly missed the golden chance. In the 64th minute of the second half, Southern Samity regained the lead. From the right flank, Mithun Kar sent a high ball towards the far post, which the goalkeeper failed to collect. Capitalising on the moment, Samir Bayen calmly slotted the ball into the net.
In the 82nd minute, Shribhumi FC made a comeback and equalised the score again through a goal by Aritra Ghosh. In additional time, at the 90+5th minute, Shribhumi FC created another chance. From the left side of the box, substitute Sanjit Khora unleashed a low shot towards the far post, but it went wide.
Shribhumi FC marked their debut in the CFL Premier Division with a spirited comeback draw, showing promise in their first campaign. Meanwhile, Southern Samity stared their promising journey under Sujata Kar, the league’s first-ever woman head coach, adding a landmark moment to the competition.
In the other fixtures of the Calcutta Football League 2025 held today, United Kolkata SC started their first Premier Division campaign with a 1-0 win against Calcutta Police Club. Khidderpore defeated Wari FC 1-0. The match between Bhawanipore FC and ASOS Rainbow ended in a 1-1 draw. United SC secured a 2-1 victory over Aryan FT.
