Mohun Bagan SG clinched their first Indian Super League win with a comeback 3-2 victory against newly crowned Durand Cup champions, Northeast United FC, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday.

Northeast United FC started the match with high pressing football. In the 5th minute, the Highlanders took the lead when Alaaeddine, from the left side of the box, passed the ball back to Bemmamer, who flawlessly placed it into the goal. However, within five minutes, Mohun Bagan SG equalized the score with a powerful header from Dipendu Biswas.


After that equalizer, Mohun Bagan SG picked up the game. However, in the 24th minute, Northeast United FC launched a quick attack. Jithin MS made a fast run from the midfield and passed the ball to the left, where Alaaeddine scored the second goal for the Highlanders.

One goal down, Mohun Bagan tried hard to get back into the game with their dominant 66% ball possession and several goal-bound moves in the first half. In the 36th minute, Dimitrios centered the ball from the left side of the box, and Manvir attempted a header, but Gurmeet managed to grip the ball. Three minutes later, Greg Stewart’s long shot was saved on the goal line by Zabaco. The first half ended in favor of Northeast United, 1-2.

The Mariners resumed the second half where they left off, while Northeast United FC focused on defending their lead. In the 61st minute, a scramble in the six-yard box allowed Mohun Bagan SG to get back in the game. Tom Aldred attempted a header, which Gurmeet failed to grip perfectly, and Subhasish Bose placed the ball into the net from the goal line.

The wait was over for the Mariners on this Monday evening, as Jamie Maclaren entered the field in the 77th minute, replacing Dimitrios. In the 87th minute, the super sub duo brought the lead for Mohun Bagan. From Sahal Samad’s inch-perfect pass, Jason Cummins netted the ball changing the score into 3-2.

With a dominating performance, Mohun Bagan SG secured their first win of ISL 2024 against the Highlanders today, completing a comeback victory for the Green and Maroons.
