Mohun Bagan target a stronger start against Odisha FC as Jamie Maclaren returns amid multiple injury concerns.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to carry their winning momentum into their next Indian Super League fixture against Odisha FC, with the Mariners aiming to consolidate their position at the top of the standings. However, head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis wants his side to address a recurring concern: their tendency to concede first and then fight their way back into matches.
Having secured victories in their previous two outings despite falling behind, the Mariners have shown character, but Dilmperis believes a stronger start will be crucial. The Greek tactician also has some selection concerns, with Sahal Abdul Samad, Miguel and Apuia unavailable for the upcoming fixture. On a positive note, Australian striker Jamie Maclaren has returned to the squad.
A stronger start on the agenda
Dilmperis was particularly keen to underline the importance of concentration from the opening whistle, especially when playing at home. He believes an early goal could force opposition teams to abandon their defensive shape and create more opportunities for Mohun Bagan to attack.
The coach remained tight-lipped about his tactical approach, particularly regarding the possibility of deploying two number eights to gain control of the midfield. However, he acknowledged the need to improve the team’s finishing, an aspect that has remained a concern despite their recent victories.
Against Punjab FC, Mohun Bagan created several opportunities in the second half but struggled to convert them. Dilmperis admitted that the team is working on finishing during training sessions, while also pointing towards confidence as a major factor behind the missed chances.
Reaching the top of the table for the first time this season has brought additional responsibility, according to the coach. Rather than focusing on goal difference, he insisted that collecting all three points remains the immediate priority.
Maclaren’s return offers attacking boost
The return of Jamie Maclaren could provide Mohun Bagan with an additional attacking option, particularly with Sahal and Miguel unavailable. Apuia’s absence also leaves the coaching staff with decisions to make in midfield.
Defensively, Rahul Bheke remains an important figure. The experienced defender credited the club’s pre-season conditioning programme and consistent maintenance work for helping him cope with the demands of a packed football calendar. He also praised Alberto Rodriguez and his fellow defenders for the understanding they have developed within the backline.
With the league campaign entering an important phase, Mohun Bagan cannot afford unnecessary setbacks. Odisha FC present another opportunity to collect valuable points, but Dilmperis will want more than just another comeback victory. A convincing start and greater efficiency in front of goal could make all the difference.
