Kolkata, September 19: Eight years later, Mohun Bagan SG lifted the historic Calcutta Football League trophy. With a contesting football display, Mohun Bagan SG secured a 3–2 victory over Mohammedan SC on Saturday evening at the Vidyasagar Krirangan, Barasat.

The twist is not the championship of the day, as this was not only Saturday; it was the massive decider day of the Calcutta Football League 2026. Where, in one day, the league, after competing over two months, came into one day to decide the champions. Where the contenders were Mohun Bagan SG, with an advantage of four points and four goals, and Mohammedan SC, with an advantage of four points and two goals.

But the derby was not enough, as East Bengal FC had an opportunity to win their match by a big margin but needed the Mohun Bagan SG and Mohammedan fixture to be a draw. Same with the Bhawanipore vs United SC match. But no other ground could catch the spotlight as the derby ended up with the result and the ultimate decider.

Now about the game, the edge-to-edge first half.

With the start, both teams got active in search of a goal, and in the 16th minute, Mohun Bagan SG missed a promising opportunity. Rabilal Mandi sent his swift cross from the left to the second post, where Sahal was positioned, but he failed to meet the chance. In the next minute, Lalthankima attempted an on-target shot with a counter-attack, though Deeprovat was alert.

In the 26th minute, Sahal found the lead. Chhangte, from the right inside, lifted the ball to the second post, which Sahal headed into the net to bring the breakthrough.

In the 41st minute, with Remsanga’s pinpoint pass, Israfil Dewan attempted a quick shot, but Deeprovat saved the threat by throwing himself at it to save the shot. In the 58th minute, Mohun Bagan SG got a close chance to move ahead, but before Sahal could pose a threat, Dinesh Meitei made a great interception. In the next minute, the drama unfolded. Remsanga went for a counter-attack in a one-on-one situation. Deeprovat came out and challenged him badly, which caused him a red card and a penalty. Mahitosh stepped in and converted the penalty to put Mohun Bagan SG ahead 2–1.

But this wasn’t the momentum, as Sayan Banerjee came onto the field to be part of the ten-man Mohun Bagan SG and shifted the momentum in their favour with putting changes to the game. In the 70th minute, with Rabilal Mandi’s cross, Sahal headed the equaliser to make it 2–2.

Just within four minutes Mohun Bagan SG took the lead again. Sandeep Malik played a forward pass from the left to Sayan Banerjee, who moved forward with the ball before sending it into the net to seal all three points and, more importantly, the Calcutta Football League championship.

Mohammedan SC still had a chance to change the outcome. In the 88th minute, Adison played a forward pass into the box, where Israfil reached the ball, but Rabilal Mandi came to the rescue with an important interception to protect the result.

The final whistle brought an end to a dramatic final day of the Calcutta Football League 2026, with Mohun Bagan SG finally lifting the trophy after eight years. The 3–2 victory over Mohammedan SC not only sealed the championship but also added another chapter to their rich CFL history. With the triumph, Mohun Bagan SG lifted their 31st Calcutta Football League trophy, continuing their legacy in the competition.
