Kolkata, September 7: High-voltage Kolkata derby ends in an unsettled situation as both East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG end with a 1–1 result at the Vidyasagar Krirangan, Barasat, in the ongoing Calcutta Football League on Monday evening. After 17 days, both the giants met again. The competition changed, but the rhythm didn’t, as both displayed intense football to the packed fans in the stadium.

Within the 7th minute of the match, East Bengal got a chance to pose a threat, as Apuia fouled Monotosh just outside the box and awarded them a free-kick. Bijoy Murmu took it and, by just inches, missed to convert.

In the 21st minute, Mohun Bagan SG got that chance as Bikram Pradhan challenged Kiyan on the right side and awarded them a free-kick, but Apuia’s shot also went over.

In the 35th minute, a defensive lapse saw Mohun Bagan almost get the lead, but before Manvir could capitalise on the ball, Gourav Shaw came out and caught the threat. However, within three minutes, Manvir, receiving a through ball from Sahal from the left inside the box, put a grounder on target, which brought the 1–0 lead for Mohun Bagan SG in the 38th minute.

In the 45th minute, Subhasish Bose almost converted Kiyan’s corner, but again Gourav Shaw stood alert to ensure they did not concede more before heading to the break.

Early in the second half, an awkward situation happened while fighting for the ball as Apuia and Monotosh Majhi interacted, and Monotosh got heavily injured, which led to him being stretchered out. With a forced change, Mohammad Bilal came in for the Red and Gold.

Probably, this was the turning point of the match, which East Bengal kept in their favour and capitalised on slowly as Mohammad Bilal started threatening the Mariners. Within two minutes after coming in, Bilal passed an inch-perfect ball to Akash Hemram inside the box, but Akash failed to place it into the empty net.

In the 62nd minute, Chaku Mandi unleashed a long shot which Deeprovat saved brilliantly. The corner followed, and from that, Uttam Hansda’s header hit the crossbar.

Within two minutes, the much-awaited goal arrived for the Red and Gold brigade through the magnificent Mohammad Bilal. Bijoy Murmu’s corner was headed down by Bilal into the net between the gathering of players to equalise at 1–1.

In the 84th minute, Mohun Bagan SG created a promising opportunity to come back into the game, where Subhasish Bose’s throw-in from the left touched many heads before Kiyan Nassiri headed it down for Sayan Banerjee, who was positioned just in front of the post. But Sayan’s shot was saved brilliantly by Gourav to protect the score level.

On the watery ground, both teams played out an intense match, and in the second half, understanding the assignment, the East Bengal boys made a comeback which protected their unbeaten run in the Calcutta Football League. However, Mohammad Bilal put the game-changing essence into East Bengal’s game as the young lad displayed a tough game against his experienced opposition side.

The result leaves both sides with a point from a derby that had everything, intensity, injuries, chances and late pressure and a contrasting approaches. East Bengal will take confidence from their second-half comeback, with derby debutant Mohammad Bilal making an immediate impact after coming on and scoring the equaliser. Mohun Bagan SG, meanwhile, will be left to rue the chances they created but failed to convert. East Bengal fielded their reserved squad, while Mohun Bagan SG featured senior-team players balanced with their CFL squads making the result an encouraging one for the Red and Gold side. Both fighted in their strategy but leave the derby honours shared.

The Indian Football Association successfully organised the historic Kolkata derby at the Vidyasagar Krirangan in Barasat, with a packed stadium witnessing another intense chapter of the rivalry. With the CFL 2026 Group A games now wrapped up, East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan SG and Bhawanipore FC have all moved into the Super Six stage.
