Lobera keeps Mohun Bagan’s Derby talk aside as focus shifts towards crucial Goa clash in tight ISL 2025-26 title race

Kolkata, May 8: The Indian Super League has entered its final phase, and on Saturday from 5:00 PM, one of the most crucial fixtures will be played between FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Fatorda Stadium. All eyes will be on this clash as both teams are standing next to each other in the points table, and even a single point gained or lost could completely change the title race scenario at this stage.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant are just one point behind the leaders East Bengal FC and Jamshedpur FC with 20 points, despite playing fewer matches than every other contender. If they win even two or three of their remaining fixtures, they could take complete control of the title race.

Their clash against FC Goa now becomes even more decisive because Goa have only two matches left with 19 points and very little room for mistakes, and also Mumbai City FC are on 19 points. Meanwhile, beating Chennaiyin FC, Punjab FC still remain dark horses with three games left and only three points separating them from the top.

Sergio Lobera made it clear that his focus is completely on the upcoming matches rather than the possible Kolkata Derby in the future. Despite the growing excitement around the title race, By saying “we need to respect all of the games,” he also stated that the league is still completely open. With several teams separated by only a few points, every fixture now carries title-defining importance.

Instead of looking too far ahead at what could happen, Sergio Lobera emphasized staying focused on football and the immediate challenge in front of his team. His words reflected a calm approach at a stage where even a single result could completely change the title race scenario in the Indian Super League.

Even with a tough contest awaiting at the home of the Gaurs, Lobera also admitted that he knows the ground very well, recalling his coaching days with FC Goa, a place where he enjoyed some of the most successful moments of his managerial career in India.

For many teams, playing at 5 PM in Goa can become physically demanding because of the heat and humidity, especially at this stage of the season. But Sergio Lobera doesn’t and his squad is not thinking about excuses before such an important clash. The coach showed complete belief in his squad and said they are ready to compete under any conditions. Rather than focusing on weather conditions, the Mariners attention remains on fighting for all points on the pitch.

Before heading into the crucial clash, the injured players recovering from their setbacks have returned to the squad, as Apuia Ralte and Alberto Rodriguez are available for tomorrow’s match. Before leaving Kolkata, the entire squad took part in the training session together.

On the other hand, Manolo Marquez, head coach of FC Goa, has been banned for one match for violating the All India Football Federation’s disciplinary code and therefore will not be available on the sidelines for Saturday’s clash.

The pressure, the points table, the returning players, and even the touchline absence of the opposition coach, everything is adding extra intensity before kickoff. With very little separating the top teams, this is no longer just another league fixture, it is a match that could heavily influence the direction of the title race in the Indian Super League and the defending champions race.
