Kolkata, January 8: Sundarban Bengal Auto FC were handed a narrow 1–0 defeat by Burdwan Blasters in an ongoing Bengal Super League fixture at Canning Stadium on Thursday evening, with an early penalty separating the two sides in a closely contested encounter.
The visitors made an effective start and were rewarded in the 9th minute when Christopher stepped up to convert a penalty, and send his team ahead with the early advantage. The goal settled Burdwan into a compact shape, allowing them to control key phases of the opening half.
Burdwan nearly doubled their lead in the 22nd minute following a set-piece situation. Bibek delivered a corner into the penalty area, where unmarked Avik attempt a header, but his header drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Sundarban Bengal Auto FC gradually grew into the match and finished the first half with 53% possession, reflecting their increased control in midfield. The hosts showed intent in the attacking third, with Richmond frequently involved in build-up play and final-third movements. Despite recording eight attempts on goal before the interval, Sundarban were unable to convert their dominance into result, sufferd lack of precision in the final moment.
The second half saw Sundarban Bengal Auto FC push higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser, while Burdwan Blasters adopted a more measured and structured approach, focusing on defensive solidity and quick transitions.
A major talking point arrived in the 78th minute, when Sundarban appealed strongly for a handball inside the penalty area. During a Richmond-led attacking move, the ball appeared to strike Avik’s hand inside the box, but the referee judged the incident not worthy of a penalty, and play was allowed to continue.
Sundarban Bengal Auto FC’s best chance to draw level came late in the match. In the 87th minute, Pawan launched a long ball into the penalty area, which was received by Henry Kiseka, the ball fell off to Lalsiem, who found space to shoot but failed to keep his effort on target, missing a crucial opportunity in the closing stages.
Burdwan Blasters managed the remaining minutes with composure to see out the result. Coming into the fixture on the back of three consecutive victories, the win extended their run to four straight wins, lifting them to fifth place with 13 points and keeping their hopes of finishing in the top four alive.
For Sundarban Bengal Auto FC, the defeat proved costly. Despite controlling large spells off the matcg they were unable to capitalise on home advantage. The loss saw Sundarban Bengal Auto FC drop to third position in the league standings, depending on results from other fixtures at the top of the table, as the competition continues to intensify.
