Shillong, August 26, 2024: NorthEast United FC is set to mark a monumental occasion in their club’s history as they prepare for their first-ever Durand Cup final on August 31, 2024. The Guwahati-based Indian Super League club secured a decisive 3-0 victory against local favorites Shillong Lajong FC in the semi-finals of the 133rd IndianOil Durand Cup at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in Shillong.
The match saw NorthEast United FC take control early on, with two first-half goals from Thoi Singh and Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie. Parthib Gogoi sealed the win with a goal in added time, ensuring the Highlanders’ place in the final—a first for them in any major national tournament since their inception.

The game kicked off to a roaring start with a crowd of over 15,000 mostly Shillong supporters. However, the home fans were quickly silenced when Spanish coach Juan Pedro Ben Ali’s decision to make changes to the starting lineup paid off. Thoi Singh opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off a well-executed move. Ajaraie followed suit in the 33rd minute, doubling the lead thanks to a brilliant pass from Spanish playmaker Nestor Roger.

Shillong Lajong FC responded with determination, with a powerful long-range shot from Wahlang forcing NorthEast United goalkeeper Gurmeet into a quick save. Despite their efforts, the hosts struggled to break through the Highlanders’ strong midfield, marshaled by Mohammed Ali Bemammer.
Ajaraie’s goal, initially ruled offside, was rightly allowed after review, giving NorthEast United a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime. The second half saw Shillong Lajong attempting to mount a comeback, but NorthEast United FC’s defense held firm. Ben Ali’s tactical substitutions, including the introduction of Parthib Gogoi, proved effective as Gogoi scored in the 93rd minute, securing a convincing 3-0 victory.
