Mumbai City FC Stages Late Comeback Against Mohun Bagan SG – ISL 2024-25 Opener Ends in 2-2 Draw

The opening fixture of the 2024-25 Indian Super League ended in a 2-2 draw between last season’s finalists, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC. The match took place at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on 13 September.

Last season, Mumbai City FC won the ISL trophy by defeating Mohun Bagan SG. Today, Mohun Bagan took an early lead, but in the second half, Mumbai City FC made a comeback and secured a point from the opening match.

In the 4th minute, Bipin Singh found the net for Mumbai City FC, but it was ruled offside and the goal was canceled. Within five minutes, Mohun Bagan took the lead with an own goal. Liston Colaco made a run down the left flank, entered the box, and delivered a cutback, which deflected off Tiri and went into the net.

Mumbai City dominated possession but couldn’t test Vishal Kaith. In the 29th minute, Mohun Bagan scored their second goal. Ashish Rai crossed the ball from the right into the box, Cummins headed it down to Alberto, and without delay, he doubled their lead.

In the second half, Tiri rectified his mistakes and scored the first goal for the defending champions. After that goal, Mumbai City FC seemed very positive and created various goal-bound moves using their left flank. Occasionally, Mohun Bagan SG launched some counter-attacks.

But the lead didn’t last for Mohun Bagan SG. Before the end of regulation time, in the 90th minute, Noufal cut the ball back from the left, and Thaer Krouma scored the second goal for Mumbai City. Coach Petr Kratky’s super subs equalized the score for Mumbai City FC.

Despite Mumbai City’s dominance in possession, Mohun Bagan’s strong first-half performance and Mumbai’s resilience led to an entertaining draw. Both teams shared a point in this highly anticipated opening fixtures of Indian Super League 2024-25.
