Kolkata, May 15: Another dominating win for the Moshal Girls as East Bengal Women sealed a 5–0 victory over Garhwal United FC Women in the ongoing Indian Women’s League on Friday evening at the East Bengal Ground. A rainy and stormy night saw goals pouring in from the Moshal girls.
East Bengal Women had already secured the league title and successfully defended it in their previous match. After this victory, they now have one final match left, the derby. The Moshal Girls have already redefined their own record, scoring 45 goals in 13 matches while conceding only five. If they secure full points in their last match, their tally will reach 39, breaking their own record once again.
With only three changes, Anthony Andrews organised his lineup tonight, though it wasn’t visible in the gameplay. Mamoni replaced Panthoi Chanu under the net, while Astham returned to the starting XI after a few matches, alongside Priyangka Devi.
However, the style remained the same as they took the lead right from the start. In the 13th minute, Ashalata Devi sent in a lobbed ball which Soumya chipped into the net. Then, in the 27th minute, capitalising on another chance, they doubled their lead.
Once again, Ashalata Devi delivered a precise aerial ball into the right side of the box. Soumya attempted to finish, but Linda Chanu made a clearance which was not proper enough as the ball stayed inside the box, allowing Priyangka Devi to place it into the net and make it 2–0 for East Bengal FC Women.
With the halftime whistle, heavy rain arrived along with a storm and thunderstorm, which led to almost a one-hour delay in the match. However, after the conditions of the pitch were assessed, the game resumed for the second half. But there were no changes in East Bengal FC Women’s gameplay.
Three more goals came in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Soumya scored her brace. Then, in the 71st minute, Fazila made it 4–0, and within two minutes, Fazila struck again to make it 5–0.
While Garhwal United FC are struggling in the relegation battle in sixth position on the points table, the heavy defeat could create further problems for them. Though they still have one match left, Sribhumi FC are just above them in fifth place, while Sesa Football Academy remain at the bottom. One win or loss could completely change the relegation scenario for these three teams.
On the other hand, the champions are continuing to show dominance through their team game. With two assists tonight, centre-back Ashalata Devi has now contributed to more than six goals this season. Fazila scored her 20th goal of the campaign, while Soumya took her tally to 10 goals. Despite suffering injuries throughout the season, or tram shuffle the team continues to display compact and dominant football. And with one more match remaining, the Moshal Girls are still marching forward strongly.
