Kolkata, July 10: In the ongoing Calcutta Football League, Diamond Harbour FC sealed a 1-0 victory over Bhawanipore FC in their third fixture on Thursday. A first-half goal from Joby Justin secured all three points for them.
With the kickoff, Bhawanipore started playing attacking football and created several goalbound moves, though the Diamond Harbour FC defense remained alert. However, in the 32nd minute, Diamond Harbour FC took the lead. From a corner kick, Vishal Das delivered a high ball into the box, which Priyant Singh tried to fist out but missed. The ball fell to Joby Justin, who placed it into the net to open the scoring for DHFC.
In the 40th minute, Diamond Harbour FC created another effective goalbound move. From the left, Supriyo Pandit made a solo run with the ball. Samad Ali tried to clear, but Supriyo edged past him and sent a cross from the left side of the box. Angousana attempted a shot but missed, and the ball fell to Joby, whose shot went over the crossbar. Within four minutes, Bhawanipore FC launched a promising attack. From the left side of the box, Sukuram Sardar chipped the ball to the unmarked Bidyashagar Singh, but before he could attempt a shot, Susnata Malik grabbed the ball to clear the threat.
In the second half, in the 64th minute, Sanathoi Meitei, from the left side inside the box, was about to cross the ball, but before he could, Subhodeep made a sliding clearance to stop Bhawanipore FC’s attack.
In the 77th minute, Diamond Harbour FC missed another goal-scoring chance. From the right side of the box, Subhajit Belal played a back pass to Rahul Paswan, who attempted a close-range shot, but the keeper made the save. DHFC took another shot on the rebound, but once again, the keeper denied the effort. In the 78th minute, Diamond Harbour FC were reduced to ten men as Vishal Das received his second yellow card of the match for a rough challenge on Salman.
Bhawanipore FC earned a free-kick in the 83rd minute from a promising position just outside the box, after Bikramjit Singh brought down substitute Shijin T with a rough tackle. Deep Saha took the free-kick but missed the scoring opportunity.
With the 1-0 scoreline, Diamond Harbour FC secured their second consecutive win today and ended Bhawanipore FC’s unbeaten run. The lone goal came from Joby Justin, who was a consistent scorer for Diamond Harbour FC in the previous CFL season. While Diamond Harbour FC had started the league with their development squad, in today’s fixture they fielded experienced players like Narohari Sherstha, Joby Justin, and Angousana. With their first Durand Cup campaign set to begin on July 28, the team has begun preparations by playing their senior players.
