Kolkata, June 26: The iconic Calcutta Football League, 2025 officially kicked off on 25th June at the Naihati Stadium, marking the beginning of its 127th edition with a grand and vibrant opening ceremony. The evening was filled with colour and culture, featuring dance performances, a soulful musical act by Poushali Banerjee, a dazzling laser light show, and a burst of fireworks that lit up the night sky. It was a celebration befitting Bengal’s rich footballing legacy, setting the tone for an exciting season ahead, with BSS Sporting Club vs Kalighat Milan Sangha fixtures.
The match kicked off at around 7:40 PM, with both teams starting on an attacking note. In the 13th minute, BSS launched a counter-attack from the right, as Suraj Mahato delivered a low cross. However, before a shot could be taken, Kalighat cleared the ball soon. Within minutes, Kalighat responded with a quick attack of their own. From the right flank, Rajen Oraon sent in a cross, and Ishaan Sahi attempted a header, but the goalkeeper made the save.
In the 32nd minute, BSS took the lead. Lallawmsanga took a shot which was fisted by the goalkeeper, and the rebound fell to David Lalchhuanawma, who slotted the ball into the net. In the 39th minutes Kalighat scored an equaliser, but the goal got disalloweded as the ball when into the net touching Ishaan Sahi’s hand.
In the 62nd minute, Kalighat MS were reduced to ten men as Amritpal Singh received a direct red card for a rough challenge on David Lalchhuanawma. In the dying moments, Sourav Chowdhury earned a free-kick for Kalighat from a promising position just outside the box. Gonmei took the free-kick, but his shot was deflected off the wall, resulting in a corner. However, they failed to break the deadlock from their final chance.
With a 1-0 win, BSS Sporting Club began their Calcutta Football League 2025 campaign on a positive note. On the other hand, Kalighat MS will now look ahead to their upcoming fixtures in search of their first victory.
