Mohun Bagan SG Triumphs in Derby: Maclaren’s Early Strike Seals 1-0 Win Over East Bengal FC

On January 11, In the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, Mohun Bagan SG dominated the derby against their arch-rivals East Bengal FC, securing a 1-0 victory. While East Bengal played out their match as colorless as the stadium’s atmosphere, and failed to defend Mohun Bagan’s excellent performance.

With the kickoff, Mohun Bagan SG took control of the game. Within two minutes, Maclaren secured the lead for the Mariners. Capitalizing on Asish Rai’s aerial ball, Macca entered the box from the right and beat Prabsukhan Gill.

In the 7th minute, East Bengal crafted a golden goal-bound opportunity, but Mohun Bagan’s defense stood firm like a barrier, denying them. Diamantakos passed the ball to Cleiton Silva inside the box in a one-on-one situation near the goal, but before Silva could take his precise attempt, Tom Aldred made a crucial clearance.

In the 21st minute, Mohun Bagan SG came close to doubling their lead. Cummins passed the ball to Maclaren inside the box on the right. Macca played a square pass to Manvir at the far post, but Manvir’s close-range shot was saved by the goalkeeper. The pace of the match slowed down after that. East Bengal appeared colour less in the first half, with a scattered defense and struggles to create goal-bound opportunities, as Mohun Bagan SG defense stood strong.

In the second half, the same display continued from the first. In the 67th minute, a beautiful one-two between Sahal and Rai saw the latter receiving the ball on the right side of the box. From a tight angle, Rai took a shot, but Gill pulled off a fantastic save, pushing the ball away for a corner.

In the 64th minute, East Bengal were reduced to ten men as Souvik Chakraborty received his second yellow card for fouling Liston. In the 89th minute, Diamantakos made a goal-bound move, but before he could strike, Vishal Kaith came off his line and cleared the threat.

With a dominating performance, Mohun Bagan SG took all three points from tonight’s derby match. On the other side, East Bengal couldn’t manage a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. With another victory, Mohun Bagan SG strengthened their position at the top spot, while East Bengal remained in 11th place.
