Mohun Bagan Begins New Year with Dominant 3-0 Victory Over Hyderabad FC

The first Indian Super League match of the new year was dominated by the table-toppers. On January 2, Mohun Bagan secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Hyderabad FC, adding three more points to their tally. With 32 points from 14 matches, the defending ISL Sheild champion tightened their grip on the top spot. Meanwhile, the Nawabs remained in 12th position with just 8 points from 14 matches.

With attacking intensity, Mohun Bagan started the match and took the lead in the 9th minute following a defensive blunder. Liston launched an attack from the left flank, made a brilliant run, and set it up by squaring the ball to Sahal. Sahal’s shot, deflected off Hyderabad FC defender Sapic after the goalkeeper’s save, trickled over the line and into the net.

Throughout the first half, the Mariners showcased their attacking prowess. Just before the halftime whistle, in the 41st minute, Tom Aldred scored with a precise header on target. Initially, the referee disallowed the goal, citing a possible handball or offside. However, after rechecking, the goal was awarded to Mohun Bagan. Despite Hyderabad dominating possession with 55% in the first half, the score favored the hosts.

Mohun Bagan resumed the game from where they left off before the first-half whistle. Early in the 51st minute, the score changed to 3-0 in favor of Mohun Bagan. In a rhythmic team display, a brilliant three-touch sequence led to the goal. Sahal passed the ball to Cummins, who played it to Maclaren on the left. From the edge of the box, Maclaren passed it back to Cummins, who took a precise on-target shot to secure the third goal.

The pace of the game slowed down, with both teams predominantly playing in midfield. In the final quarter, during the 75th minute, Hyderabad attempted a goal-bound shot. However, Correia’s long-range effort was easily handled by Vishal Kaith.

After missing three matches due to injury, Greg Stewart returned to the field in the 78th minute, replacing Cummins. Despite Hyderabad dominating possession in the second half, they failed to find the net. Meanwhile, the table toppers secured another victory, kicking off the new year in style.

Mohun Bagan‘s next fixture is the highly anticipated derby match against East Bengal FC on January 11. However, due to the Ganga Sagar Fair, the match may be postponed, as stated by the West Bengal Sports Minister, citing a lack of security personnel. The final decision is yet to be made on whether the match will be postponed or shifted to another city. Hyderabad FC will play their next away fixtures against FC Goa on January 8.
