Drazic’s brace inspires Mohun Bagan’s victory over Odisha FC as Jamie Maclaren makes his long-awaited return.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant continued their winning run with a thrilling victory over Odisha FC, extending their lead at the top of the table. After a goalless first half, Dejan Drazic emerged as the difference-maker with two crucial goals, while the Mariners’ attacking momentum produced an entertaining second-half contest. Odisha fought back through Mohammad Eid and Nascimento, but Lee Erwin’s late strike proved insufficient. The match also witnessed Jamie Maclaren’s return after more than six weeks.
Mohun Bagan failed to break the deadlock in the first half
Mohun Bagan, as expected, continued to dominate but failed to find a goal in the first 45 minutes. The Mariners maintained precision for most of the time while Mafela remained a key highlight for the Juggernauts. Mohun Bagan’s attacking gameplay was reflected in the very first moments of the match, when in just the 23rd second, Lee Erwin failed to convert a Dezan Drazic assist in front of the post. The Mariners’ attack led by Lee Erwin and Manvir Singh again gathered momentum when Drazic created another opportunity in the 11th minute keeping Hrithik Tiwari busy in the post.
Liston Colaco got a start in this match and also created an opportunity in the 17th minute, when he collided with the goalkeeper in the box and failed to shoot the ball intthe nets. The Mariners’ attack did not stop there; in the 21st minute Drazic gave a long pass to Liston, and then he gave it to Manvir who missed the ball in front of the net. Right after that, in the 22nd minute, Manvir again missed an opportunity. After that, Liston and Erwin continued to attack but the deadlock was yet to come.
In the 40th minute, Dezan Drazic from the right flank again missed an opportunity in the net while dribbling the ball. Mohun Bagan’s last opportunity before half-time came in the 42nd minute when Samir volleyed the ball to Manvir from the midfield but failed to convert it into a goal.
The second half remained a goal fest
Both teams came in the second half with renewed hope; suddenly the movement with the ball changed and the two teams turned the dead rubber into a goal fest. Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 47th minute as Drazic finished clinically after being set up by Thapa. Coming in from the right, Drazic controlled the ball before finding the back of the net.
The happiness did not stay with the Mariners for long as Odisha FC responded quickly, with Mohammad Eid equalising in the 52nd minute following Nihal Sudeesh’s assist. The goal fest paused for a few minutes but again gained momentum when Drazic restored Mohun Bagan’s advantage in the 74th minute, converting Changte’s delivery. Manvir missed an opportunity after that. Odisha then again came into the game as Nascimento equalised with the Mariners in the 79th minute.
In a major development, Jamie Maclaren who was out of the field for more than 1.5 months made his first appearance today replacing Manvir Singh in the 86th minute. He joined the field as a striker, while Chhangte handled the right wing.
The match was in its closing minutes and that’s when Lee Erwin pulled one back for Mariners in the 87th minute, assisted by Subhasish Bose who was playing his 200th match today. As the final whistle blew Mohun Bagan fans who got the opportunity to come and watch the match for free cheered loudly; it was Mohun Bagan’s fourth consecutive match win, and with this, Mohun Bagan remained on top of the table.
