Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC Begin with Attacking Intent
Punjab FC head coach Pavlos Dermitzakis made one alteration to the side that defeated Odisha FC in their opening match. Young forward Vishal Yadav was included in the starting lineup in place of the injured Alfred Planas Moya, becoming the third-youngest player to start for Punjab FC in the ISL.
The hosts started brightly, moving the ball confidently and looking to exploit spaces across the Mumbai City defence. In the fourth minute, Rishikanta Meitei tested goalkeeper Rehenesh T.P. with a powerful long-range effort, forcing him to punch the ball away for a corner.
Mumbai City responded with attacks down the flanks. Otormín came close to opening the scoring with a header that narrowly missed the target in the 10th minute. Punjab’s defenders remained alert, with Khaiminthang Lhungdim and Muhammad Uvais making important interventions to limit the Islanders’ attacking threat.
Mumbai City created another promising opportunity in the 22nd minute when Brandon Fernandes struck from outside the penalty area. Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh reacted well to make a diving save. The goalkeeper was called into action again four minutes later, recovering quickly after Brandon found an opening inside the box.
Lhungdim Hits the Crossbar Before Half-Time
Punjab FC continued to build attacks through their combinations on the left flank. Muhammad Suhail and Raphaël Messi Bouli linked up effectively in the 33rd minute, with Messi cutting the ball back into a dangerous area. However, Vishal Yadav was unable to reach the pass in time.
At the other end, Punjab centre-backs Bijoy Varghese and Nikhil Prabhu combined to block successive attempts from Otormín and Brandon Fernandes. Punjab were subsequently forced to make an early substitution when Rishikanta Meitei sustained an injury, with Bishu Sharma coming on in the 36th minute.
Both teams searched for a breakthrough as the first half progressed, but neither could convert their opportunities. Punjab came particularly close in stoppage time when a well-worked move involving Vishal Yadav, Khaiminthang Lhungdim and Ricky Shabong created space for Lhungdim to shoot.
The left-back unleashed a curling effort towards the top-right corner, only for the ball to crash against the crossbar. Muhammad Suhail delivered another dangerous cross shortly afterwards, but no teammate could get on the end of it.
Despite the chances at both ends, the teams went into the interval with the score goalless.
Otormín Gives Mumbai City the Lead from the Spot
Mumbai City increased their attacking pressure after the restart. Akash Mishra advanced down the left before Punjab’s defence dealt with the danger, while Farukh Choudhary later sent a header wide from Valpuia Ralte’s cross.
Punjab also looked threatening on the counter. Diego Raposo played a well-weighted pass to release Bishu Sharma in the 51st minute, but Mumbai City recovered defensively to prevent the attack from developing.
The hosts continued to search for openings through Suhail and Uvais, although Mumbai City defender Lazar Cirkovic blocked Suhail’s attempt from outside the box.
The game changed in the 63rd minute when Noufal P.N. drove forward from the left. Bijoy Varghese slipped while attempting to stop the winger, prompting the referee to award Mumbai City a penalty.
Otormín took responsibility from the spot two minutes later and calmly sent his right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner. The goal gave Mumbai City a 1-0 advantage and left Punjab facing the challenge of finding a response in the closing stages.
Punjab FC’s Late Pressure Pays Off
Trailing by a goal, Punjab FC committed more players forward in search of an equaliser. Mumbai City attempted to protect their lead by maintaining a compact defensive shape, but the hosts continued to create opportunities.
Arshdeep Singh kept Punjab within reach with a comfortable save from Akash Mishra’s header in the 74th minute. At the other end, Punjab struggled to find a clear route through the visitors’ defensive line.
Substitute Sanathoi Meetei brought fresh energy to the attack and delivered a dangerous cross in the 78th minute, which Carlos Delgado intercepted. Punjab continued to press, looking for a decisive opening as the clock ticked down.
In the 87th minute, Sanathoi’s teammate Arshvir Singh delivered a set-piece ball that allowed the substitute to attempt a header, but the effort drifted wide.
Punjab refused to surrender, and their persistence finally produced the breakthrough in the 90th minute. Sanathoi delivered an accurate cross from the left into the penalty area, where fellow substitute Gurkirat Singh rose above the defence and powered a close-range header into the top-left corner.
Rehenesh had no chance of stopping the effort, and the goal sparked celebrations among the home side as Punjab restored parity at 1-1.
Punjab FC Remain Unbeaten in ISL 2026-27
The equaliser gave Punjab renewed confidence in the closing moments. Messi Bouli tested Rehenesh with a left-footed attempt in the 92nd minute, but the Mumbai City goalkeeper made the save to preserve the draw.
The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought result, with both teams taking a point after an entertaining contest in New Delhi. Mumbai City had looked on course for victory following Otormín’s second-half penalty, but Punjab’s relentless attacking effort secured a share of the spoils.
Having already claimed a dramatic late victory against Odisha FC in their season opener, Punjab FC once again demonstrated their resilience. Gurkirat Singh’s decisive header and Sanathoi Meetei’s excellent delivery proved instrumental in keeping the Shers unbeaten after their first two matches of the ISL 2026-27 campaign.
