Irfan Yadwad put Chennaiyin FC ahead in the 64th minute, but Chiki’s crucial header earned FC Goa a hard-fought point in their season opener at Fatorda.
FC Goa began their 2026-27 MG Indian Super League (ISL) campaign with a 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday. Irfan Yadwad handed the visitors the lead in the 64th minute, but Chiki’s well-placed header eleven minutes later helped the Gaurs secure a share of the points.
Both teams showed attacking intent throughout the contest, particularly in the second half, but neither could find the decisive goal to claim all three points.
Goalless First Half as Both Teams Search for an Opening
The opening 45 minutes saw FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC attempt to build their attacks patiently from the back. Both sides looked to progress into the final third, but disciplined defending and a lack of clinical finishing prevented either team from breaking the deadlock.
Despite their efforts, the teams headed into the interval with the scoreline unchanged at 0-0.
Irfan Yadwad Breaks the Deadlock for Chennaiyin FC
Chennaiyin FC made their breakthrough in the 64th minute when Irfan Yadwad produced a composed finish to put the visitors ahead. The forward struck a right-footed effort into the far corner, giving Chennaiyin the advantage in a closely contested encounter.
The Marina Machans looked to build on their lead, with Ramon Taque testing the FC Goa defence through a powerful attempt towards the bottom-left corner from a tight angle on the right.
However, FC Goa responded with increased urgency, pushing forward in search of an equaliser.
Chiki’s Powerful Header Rescues a Point for FC Goa
The hosts came close to restoring parity in the 70th minute when Ramon unleashed a curling effort from distance that struck the post. Udanta Singh also threatened the Chennaiyin goal, with his attempt crashing against the crossbar as FC Goa intensified their attacking pressure.
The sustained pressure finally paid off in the 75th minute. After Udanta Singh was fouled in the attacking half, FC Goa earned a free kick. Chiki made the most of the opportunity, directing a header into the bottom-right corner to bring the Gaurs back on level terms.
With the score at 1-1, FC Goa continued to push for a winner. Chiki threatened again in the 79th minute with an attempt from inside the penalty area, but the hosts were unable to find a way past the Chennaiyin defence for a second time.
Late Chances Fail to Produce a Winner
Chennaiyin FC remained dangerous on the counter and nearly regained the lead when Ramon rose to meet a cross from the left. However, his header sailed over the crossbar with the FC Goa goalkeeper off his line.
Both teams continued to seek a decisive goal during the closing stages, but neither could convert their opportunities into a winner.
FC Goa’s attacking intent was reflected in their four corners, compared to Chennaiyin FC’s one, as the hosts pressed forward in the second half.
Both Teams Settle for a Point in Fatorda
The 1-1 result means FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC open their ISL 2026-27 campaigns with a point each. Chennaiyin will take encouragement from their ability to seize the lead away from home, while FC Goa can draw confidence from their response and persistence after falling behind.
Although neither side managed to secure a winning start, the contest provided an engaging opening encounter, with both teams showing glimpses of their attacking potential ahead of the remainder of the season.
