Mohun Bagan SG edge past Jamshedpur FC in Breathtaking Penalty Shootout, book their spot in Durand Cup 2026 semis

Kolkata, August 17: After an edge-to-edge quarter-final clash, Mohun Bagan SG booked their place in the Durand Cup 2026 semi-final after beating Jamshedpur FC in a breathtaking penalty shootout on Monday evening at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

The match ended 1–1 after 90 minutes, with neither side able to find a winner. With the scores level, the quarter-final went into a penalty shootout, where Mohun Bagan SG eventually held their nerve to secure a thrilling 9–8 victory and seal their place in the last four.

Early, just within two minutes, Sahal Abdul Samad found the net for the Mariners. Following a defensive lapse, the ball found Drazic, who set it up for Sahal. Sahal placed the ball into the net, while Pratik Chowdhury reached out but failed to intercept as the shot was precisely destined for the net.

In the 17th minute, Jamshedpur FC created a goal-bound chance. Lalhriatpuia’s forward pass found Sanan, who attempted a shot from inside the right of the box, though Vishal Kaith made the save.

Ten minutes later, Mohun Bagan SG got a chance when Albino Gomes failed to judge the flight of Sahal’s cross from the right. Drazic attempted to meet it with a header from close range, but his effort went off target.

In the 38th minute, Albino Gomes saved what was probably a certain lead-taking shot for Mohun Bagan SG when Sahal attempted a long-range effort. Just before the half-time break, the Red Miners found their equaliser. Rashithoi unleashed a long-range shot which Vishal Kaith fisted away but failed to clear or gather. With no green-and-maroon defender covering the situation, Devendra followed up and sent the ball into the net, making it 1–1.

In the second half, the Red Miners came out strong as Devendra’s goal gave them a lifeline. As the game moved towards the end, it became an even contest, with both teams searching for the winner. Meanwhile, Drazic was replaced by Kiyan Nassiri, after suffering a slight injury.

In the 79th minute, freshly introduced Sayan Banerjee set the ball up from the left inside the box for Maclaren, who attempted a close-range shot, but his effort went wide. In the 88th minute, Anirudh Thapa earned a free-kick and delivered it into the box, but an incident occurred as Alberto fell down while appealing that his shirt had been pulled. The situation overshadowed any potential chance from the set-piece.

In the final minute of the match, at 90+5, Sayan Banerjee attempted a long-range shot from the right side, but Albino Gomes was alert to deal with the threat. As a result, the match headed into the first penalty shootout of the ongoing Durand Cup quarter-finals. Both teams showed that they had practised well for the shootout, but something different was needed from both goalkeepers. After a lengthy shootout and 18 penalties, the result finally came out.

Hriata stepped up first for the Red Miners and found the target, before Rahul Bheke made it 1–1 for Mohun Bagan SG. Raynier then put Jamshedpur FC ahead, while debutant Samir Zeljkovic made it 2–2 for the Mariners.

Aman CK converted to make it 3–2, before Subhasish restored parity at 3–3. Abhishek Ambekar then made it 4 Jamshedpur FC, while Maclaren kept Mohun Bagan SG alive at 4–4.

Pronoy Haldar put the Red Miners ahead again at 5–4, but Kiyan Nassiri responded to make it 5–5. Provat Lakra converted to make it 6–5, before Anirudh Thapa made it 6–6.

Pratik Chowdhury then made it 7–6 for Jamshedpur FC, while Alberto Rodriguez levelled it at 7–7. Nikhil Barla put the Red Miners ahead once again at 8–7, but Suhail Bhat kept his nerve to make it 8–8.

With both teams refusing to give up, the shootout went beyond the first eight penalties, setting up a dramatic finish, the 17-year-old shining star from Jamshedpur FC, Mama, stepped up but missed the target, while Abhishek Tekcham converted his penalty to put Mohun Bagan SG ahead 9–8, booking their place in the semi-finals and securing their passage to Shillong. After the last quarter final clash of Northeast United FC and Shillong Lajong, the opponent Mohun Bagan SG will come up.
