Kolkata, January 23: West Bengal registered a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Uttarakhand in their second clash of the 79th National Championship for Santosh Trophy 2026 at the Dhakuakhana Football Stadium, Assam, on friday afternoon, in what turned out to be a tense and attacking contest decided deep into stoppage time.
From the opening whistle, Bengal dictated the tempo with an attacking approach, pressing high and moving the ball with intent. Uttarakhand, however, remained disciplined at the back and looked to test Bengal on the counter whenever opportunities arose.
The first half saw West Bengal create a series of promising chances. In the 23rd minute, Robi delivered a well-placed cross from the right flank, but before Bengal could convert, Uttarakhand defender Gourab Rawat attempt a crucial interception to clear the danger. That phase sparked momentum for Bengal, as they followed it up with three consecutive goal-bound moves, yet the final touch continued to elude them.
Despite West Bengal’s sustained pressure, Uttarakhand’s defence stayed alert and organised, frustrating the attackers and ensuring the scoreline remained goalless for the majority of the match. Uttarakhand also managed a few counter-attacks, keeping Bengal cautious at the back.
Just when the match appeared to be heading towards a draw, Bengal found the breakthrough in the 90+7th minute. A long ball was launched into the Uttarakhand box, and after the initial rebound, Narohari reacted swiftly. He controlled the ball with a composed chest trap before firing a decisive shot into the net, finally breaking the deadlock and sending the Bengal camp into celebration.
The goal was a fitting reward for West Bengal’s relentless effort throughout the match, as they showed patience and belief until the very end. With this win, Bengal sit at the top of the table on goal difference, maintaining their strong start to the title defending campaign.
Bengal will next face Rajasthan on 25 January as they look to continue their winning momentum in the Santosh Trophy 2026 campaign.
